CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
CATHERINE’S POV
“You love me?” I asked, surprised by his confession.
Burke had been acting nice to me since and I only thought it was because he wants what he can’t have.
He only wanted me because I was with another man, and not because he loves me, or was this just one of his schemes to get under my skirt?
“Fuck yes, I have always loved you,” He said, and I doubted him this time.
“You married another woman seven years ago after breaking my heart, and you stand here to tell me about love? You don’t love me, Burke; you just want what you can’t have,” I yelled at him, trying hard not to punch him in the face because the events of the last seven years were coming back to me like they happened yesterday.
“I had no fucking choice, Catherine; that was all I could do to protect you,” His voice sounded apologetic, but I don’t care; Burke was good at playing this kind of game; in other words, Burke was a fuckboy.
“Everyone has a choice, Burke; you chose to break my heart; what were your reasons?” I asked, and Burke became restless, he was walking everywhere aimlessly, like he couldn’t get a hold of himself.
“It’s very complicated, you won’t understand,” He said, still pacing around the room. If I did not know Burke well, I’d say he was afraid.
“If it’s that complicated, then don’t tell me you fucking love me,” I yelled before stomping out of the gym.
Suddenly, I saw Regina standing by the door; it seemed like she had been eavesdropping.
“I’m sorry,” She apologized before running off because if Burke saw her, she would have a lot to explain.
I went to the garden to clear my head. I initially wanted to go to the swimming pool, but I figured Burke would go there after finishing in the gym.
“I’m so stupid,” I said to myself, using my hand to hit my forehead.
“No, you aren’t,” I heard Burke’s voice say; I turned around only to see Burke standing above me.
“I am the stupid one,” He said, as he sat beside me. I tried not to blush, but the fact that Burke had followed me here was enough reason to blush hard.
“Why did you follow me?” I asked, acting like I didn’t care, but deep down, the excitement I was feeling was something I couldn’t explain.
“I followed you because I love you, Catherine. Besides, you are my mate,” He said, smiling.
Burke had never said he loved me, not even when we were best friends but now, he is saying it like he had always said it.
“I don’t feel any mate bond, Burke, isn’t that awkward?” I asked.
Burke just stared at me, he had nothing to say about that as well.
The moon goddess had many tricks, but this isn’t part of it; Burke claims he is feeling a mate bond with me, which I believe. I think something is wrong with me. That was why I didn’t feel the mate bond, probably because I was engaged to another man.
“If you feel the mate bond, would you leave him?” He asked me and I shook my head in response.
“He was there when you left me; he took my kids as his own; why the hell would I want to hurt such a sweet soul?” I asked a rhetorical question.
“Can I ask something personal?” Burke asked, covering my palm with his large palm and I didn’t object to his touch.
“I don’t have a choice, Burke,” I replied to his question, and he returned my reply with a smile, making the dimples on his left cheek to be obvious.
“If Jaxon isn’t the father of your children, who is?” He asked, arching his eyebrows.
For a minute, I could not form any words; I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.
“If you don’t know the father, that’s okay,” Burke said, after noticing my discomfort because of the question.
“I know the father, but the father doesn’t know he is the one,” I said, without looking at Burke.
“That’s some deep shit; if I were the father, I would love to know. But that is for you to decide,” He said, patting my back.
Probably, it was time to tell him the truth, that the triplets are his children and a result of our one-night stand. As I was about to say the truth, Harley barged in on us.
“Look who we have here, the Alpha and the whore,” Harley said rudely, resting more emphasis on the word ‘whore’.
I ignored her and looked back at the beautiful garden when Burke spoke up.
“Don’t call her that again, if you do, I’ll banish you from entering my mansion,” he said, defending me.
I felt my heart skip a beat hearing Burke defend me, even if he knew she was kind of right; I mean, a cheat is a whore.
“You are ridiculous, Burke, you just finished fucking Regina, and now you want Catherine,” She said, and I knew she wanted to spike me up with that; unknowingly to her, I saw Regina and Burke together already.
“Shut the fuck up Harley,” Burke said, looking at me to see if I was affected by her words, but I wasn’t, but I wasn’t. Harley was simply pained that Burke picked me and not her.
“Oops, I’m sorry, Whores don’t like being called whores,” She retorted, and I wasn’t going to ignore her again.
“You call me a whore, but you are the one rubbing yourself all over a man that doesn’t want you,” I said and the Hurt in Harley’s eyes was evident.
” I kissed Burke, and I freaking loved it; you wished it was you, right?” My voice sounded sarcastic, and I was proud of myself for standing up to Harley, even if I knew I would regret it, by the time I got to my room.
Everywhere was quiet, and the anger in the air was palpable until Ava entered the garden.
“Ethan is dead,” She yelled and our attention was drawn to her immediately.
