CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
CATHERINE’S POV
They ran out and left me in the garden, I couldn’t bring myself to leave the garden because I just murdered someone.
I killed Ethan; I thought my cure would work; I was so stupid to put his life at risk. My heart was heavy, and tears fell from my cheeks freely; I couldn’t think straight at the moment.
“Fuck,” I yelled, as I fell to the ground, weeping. This reminded me of my foster parent; I killed them, too.
It was years back when my mum fell ill, so I went in search of a cure, without the knowledge of my father and my mother.
Burke and I went to the forest to get some herbs, and some witches helped us because they said I had the spirit of a witch, which I didn’t understand.
On my way out of the forest, I found my father dead on the floor, his heart ripped from his chest. In tears, I ran home and saw my mum still on her sick bed.
“Where is your father, Cat? He went in search of you; we have been looking for you,” She said, and the tears fell from my eyes freely; I killed my father without even knowing it.
“I found him dead, mum; he was killed by some unknown force,” I told her, and my mum couldn’t get a hold of herself.
I tried all I could to keep her calm, determined to save her from dying, but it was all a waste, as my mother had a heart attack in the midst of the commotion, and that was the last time I saw my mum alive.
The memories came back to me like it happened yesterday and not years ago. Ethan was like a father to me too, and I ripped his heart from his chest, and I stopped his breathing.
Tears fell from my eyes, and I couldn’t bring myself to see his lifeless body, the disappointment in Burke’s eyes, and the anger in Ava’s eyes.
“I failed Ava,” I said to myself quietly, remembering how I told her not to worry that I would keep her father alive.
“My parents died by my hand too,” I heard Susan’s voice; sometimes, I always forget she was with me; she follows me everywhere I go and tries her best to stay quiet.
“What do you mean?” I asked, still weeping profusely.
Susan sat beside me, and without waiting for an invitation from me, she opened her teeth, and I saw fangs.
“You are Hybrid,” I said, alarmed at the fact Susan was Hybrid, she never acted like a vampire.
“Yes, I am; I killed my mother when I was transforming into a Vampire, that is why I don’t show my Vampire side; I chose to be a wolf because being a Vampire reminds me of my mum,” She said, as tears filled her eyes again.
It seems like she read my mind because she knew exactly what I was thinking; it’s not surprising because she is a Vampire; that’s among their skills.
“I’m sorry Susan, I didn’t know you have been through a lot,” I said, patting her on her back.
“That’s not all; when my father found out, he killed himself, saying he couldn’t be the father of a Hybrid,” She said, putting on a painful smile, and for a moment, I hated her father, being a Vampire wasn’t that bad even if most of them were evil.
“He said Vampires were evil, and he won’t be part of my life; he shot himself in the head, right in my presence,” Susan said, and my mouth fell open; I always thought I had been through a lot, but I hadn’t even started.
“Susan, that must have been heartbreaking; I am deeply sorry,” I said, but she smiled in return, seems like she was already used to the pity people show after they heard her story.
“I am not saying this because of your pity mam, I saying it because you were thinking you are the cause of your Foster parent’s death, but you aren’t, I’m sorry I intruded on your privacy by reading your thoughts,” She said, standing up to her feet, and standing behind me like she always did.
“Thank you,” I murmured, wiping the tears that were on my face.
“Mam, Master Burke would love to see you,” a guard said and looked to the ground sadly.
I won’t be able to look Burke in the face after Killing his father; I wonder what he was about to say to me; I just hope it’s not something that would hurt me forever.
“Is it urgent? Because I would like to stay here for a little longer,” I replied to the Guard after a few minutes of silence.
“Yes, mam, it’s very urgent; Master Burke says he wants to see you immediately,” He said, ushering me to stand up.
I rolled my eyes and stood up, my legs were shaking as I walked towards Burke’s Mansion.
It didn’t take long before I arrived at Ethan’s room, Burke’s eyes were red as he stared at me.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for this to happen; this medication was supposed to work; I made sure there was nothing harmful, fuck, I killed Ethan,” I said, with pleading eyes, and Burke looked at me, almost amused.
“The medication has nothing harmful right?” He asked, doubting my medication.
“It has nothing harmful, I promise you; all the herbs used were edible and were to cure illness,” I replied to his question, but his facial emotion did not change; I knew I was in deep trouble, regardless of the fact that Burke claimed he loves me.
“Nothing that would make red marks appear on my father’s neck and face?” He asked, and I shook my head confused about his question.
“I would never hurt Ethan, I loved him like my father,” I explained.
“Look at him,” Burke said, pointing towards Ethan’s loveless body.
I closed my eyes for some minutes before looking at Ethan’s body; his mouth was opened down like he was struggling to breathe, and water missed with blood flew down from his eyes. The red mark on his neck was very evident like a rope was wrapped around his neck.
Ethan didn’t die because of his illness, he was fucking murdered.
