CHAPTER THIRTY
AVA’S POV
My eyes were already getting big because of too much crying; losing my brother and father at the same time was taking a huge toll on me.
Burke might be a pain in the ass most times, but he is still my brother, and I don’t want him to get hurt, but Travis is surely going to kill him; he is way stronger.
My father is not getting better; I know he is going to die, but I don’t know when Catherine can manage his illness. She can’t heal him; there is no cure for the Affliction.
Harley hasn’t been around today; she was suspended from entering Burke’s Mansion because poison was found in her possession. I pleaded on her behalf, but Burke is adamant about my request sometimes, especially when it has to do with Catherine, that is part of the reason I hate her.
I was feeling bored and depressed, so I sent a message to Harley so she could come over, since Burke isn’t around, none of the Servants would snitch, Harley did a good job gaining their trust, which can die for Harley, making it easier for us to get rid of Catherine, although I don’t know what Harley did you get their trust, I didn’t ask her because I didn’t care, it was just a little strange though.
“Hey, bestie,” Harley said as she opened my door, smiling at me childishly.
Harley was wearing leather pants with a white tank top and a jean jacket. She made her hair into a French curve, wore light make-up, and always had a good sense of fashion, unlike Catherine, who dresses like a doctor every darn time; that is part of the reason I hate her.
Harley walked towards my bed majestically, and for a second, I thought if I wasn’t straight, Harley would be my type of girl; I would date her.
“Hey girl, I thought you won’t come,” I said, chuckling.
“Did you know how urgent your message sounded? I couldn’t help but get worried about you baby girl,” She said, which made me blush. I felt lucky to have a nest friend like her who cares about you, more than she cares about herself.
“Thank you,” I whispered and she ignored my appreciation rudely, but I was used to it, she hated it when you thanked her and I do not know the reason for that till now, and I don’t want to ask, in order not to bring old memories, I know Harley had been through a lot.
“So what the hell is happening baby? I didn’t understand your message; you would have sent a raven than sent dumb servants,” she said in a hushed tone, making me giggle. I wondered how the servants loved her so much even though she threw insults at them daily.
“Today’s Burke and Travis duel, I thought you knew,” I said, but the statement sounded more like a question, She looked at me in surprise, like she didn’t know about the duel.
“Fuck, are they still doing that?” She asked, releasing her hair from the French curve.
“Yes they are still doing it, and what the hell are you doing?” I asked because she was starting to undress.
“I can’t wear this for a Duel Ava,” she said, as she searched my wardrobe for a befitting dress.
“I’m not going for the duel; I can’t watch my brother die; that would be too much for me,” I replied, as Harley wore one of my pink shirts and jeans pants.
“You will have to have a baby; you will just have to; we need to be there for Burke; what if he survives,” She said, throwing a shirt and a pair of jeans at me.
I didn’t want to go initially, but since Harley was going, I had no choice; she loves my brother and would do anything for him.
“Okay, besides, Catherine is there already,” I said, as I pulled out my night dress and started wearing the clothes Harley threw at me.
“What the hell, why would you do that to me? You told Catherine about the duel before you told me?” Harley asked with anger in her voice. She sounded like Catherine when she was angry, but I don’t know why.
“I’m sorry, I was in a sad state, and I told her everything; let’s go now, so we will be there in time; it will even look like we came before her,” I said apologetically.
Harley did not give me a reply; that is how she does when she is angry, and I’m used to it.
Within a few minutes, we were done dressing, and we were on our horses heading to the market square.
Soon we were at the market square; it was a long and stressful ride because Burke and Catherine took the fastest horses, leaving the slow ones for me and Harley.
“Why are people so many like this?” Harley asked, looking at the people who gathered to watch their Alpha and Gammer fight in a duel; they wanted to know who their next Alpha would be.
But they weren’t who I was looking at; I was looking at Catherine, who was in the middle of the duel, in her human fucking form; how the hell did she get there? And she is still yet to transform.
Her eyes were filled with terror, but Burke was in fear more, Burke’s wolf was white, with a golden line around his neck. That was a sign he is the Alpha.
“Are you even listening?” Harley asked, looking at me.
” No, Harley, I’m looking at Catherine, who is in the middle of the duel,” I said, and Harley turned to the scene immediately; she was shocked at the sight.
“This little brat knows how to cause a scene,” Harley mumbled, as she folded her hands beneath her breast angrily.
“I bet you, she does,” I said in awe.
Suddenly, an arrow was fired in Catherine’s direction; by my calculations, the arrow would hit her directly in her heart.
I closed my eyes tightly, I couldn’t watch the scene of Catherine’s death; the cries of people filled the air.
