CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
CATHERINE’S POV
I am still in shock about what I heard from Burke last night; he was what he did to me seven years ago. Even the goddess won’t make him my mate.
But he became so sure; I had never had a mate before, though, because I kept the wolf part of me hidden for seven years; it felt like I detached from my wolf because I hadn’t heard from her since I left the pack, I haven’t even transformed in seven years.
I got off my bed and took a quick shower before heading to the kitchen to get something to eat.
“Hi, Catherine,” Ava greeted me, sitting at the dining table. She filled her mouth with bread, allowing oy crumbs to fall on the table.
“Good morning, Ava; where is Burke?” I asked, wondering why I even asked, I wasn’t interested in seeing him, not after how awkward last night was, he left the swimming pool in pain and confusion, I once felt bad that I caused the pain, but the truth is that the moon goddess caused him pain after karma had taken a turn on him.
“He went to get himself killed,” Ava said, sipping some tea and I stopped walking towards the kitchen immediately.
“What the hell did you just say?” I asked Ava; she dropped her glass of tea on the table, exhausted by my endless questions.
“I thought he would have told you today was his duel with Travis and his last day on earth,” Ava said, rolling her eyes.
I was confused as to why Burke would want a duel with his childhood friend. Burke was a very strong man, but regardless, Travis was way stronger than he was; Travis has killed many men without so much effort, so why the hell would Travis and Burke be at a duel against each other?
“I’m sorry, but I’ll have them ask, what the fuck is the duel about? I thought they were best friends. ” I asked, taking a seat opposite Ava, who was exhausted by my numerous questions.
“Travis fucked his ex-wife Serena; I thought you knew that already,” Ava dropped the bombshell, and my mouth fell open in surprise; no wonder he talked to Travis rudely during the board meeting I attended.
“How would I know when you all refused to tell me?” I asked, angrily pushing Ava’s tea away because she was giving it more attention than she was giving me.
“Come on,” She yelled in frustration.
“Why are they in a duel? Burke only gets to fight with his pack members when they challenge him, and he wants to be Alpha,” I said, even if I felt I had answered my question.
“you are a smart doctor; you have said it all,” She exclaimed, dragging her tea back.
“why the fuck does Travis want to be Alpha? Burke is doing a good darn job,” I said, in frustration.
“Well, When Sereca was banished after she and her Children were taken to the north Turret for some time, Travis was angry, most especially because his children were involved, so he wants to be Alpha so he can bring Sereca and her children back into the pack, so they would rule together,” Ava said, sounding exhausted.
“That’s bull shit, where is the duel at?” I asked, giving a strong hug to save Burke even if he acted strange last night.
“They are at the market square, but if you are going there now, just know Burke is probably dead or almost dead,” Ava said with her voice breaking, she raised her head to look at me and I saw how red her eyes were, she must have been crying, for the safety of her brother.
“He won’t die, I drive there in time and stop this madness,” I said, placing my hands on her exposed thighs.
“You don’t drive to a war, Catherine, you use a horse,” She reminded me, and she was right; I almost forgot my Pack’s rule.
Without wasting more time, I ran to my room and wore war-like clothes, with three guns hidden in my breast pocket.
I hurried out of the house and jumped on one of the fastest horses Burke had in his house.
“You have to be fast buddy,” I yelled, tapping his body before wiping it to start running to the market square.
My mind was still going back to what I just heard about Travis; I wondered how he felt when he found out his best friend was having sex with his wife and gave birth to three children under his roof. Burke has been through a lot lately.
“Come on, if you aren’t fast enough, Burke might die,” I yelled at the horse, and it felt like that was magic because the horse tripled his race, and within thirty minutes, we were at the market square where many people were gathering.
“How am I going to get past these people and get to Burke, so I’ll be able to stop this duel, ” I said to myself hoping off the horse,”
I took steady steps and squeezed myself between many people until I was at the front, and I could get a proper view of Burke; luckily, he was hardly injured; rather, Travis had numerous marks on his face, his arms, and his legs.
I waved my hands in the air, but Burke was too concentrated on killing Travis, and if he turned away, Travis would use that against him, so Burke decided to just focus on Travis.
“If you are the Alpha, you would never go on a duel with a mere commoner,” someone from the crowd yelled and Burke was distracted for the first time since I got here.
“Who the hell said that fucking messed up shit?” He asked, angrily.
Suddenly Travis pounced on him, making Burke fall to the ground with a loud sound like thunder.
I did not know when Travis raised the sword to stab Burke.
“Wait!” I yelled, entering the fighting arena.
Everyone fell silent, and Everyone was looking at me with questions in their eyes.
Shit, what the hell have I done?
