CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
BURKE’S POV
I made Catherine sleep before going back to my room; I was still shocked that Catherine was my second chance mate; how was I supposed to tell her that? Why did the moon goddess do this to me?
I rolled onto my bed, and I was certain I wouldn’t be able to sleep, so I decided to meet my best friend and second-in-command, Jack.
We were about once a trio until Travis decided to backstab me and fuck my wife, or rather ex-wife, since that day, I broke all ties with Travis so did Jack, although he had been trying hard to get my trust back, which is very impossible, not after giving my wife three children and making me train them.
I love the children Sereca gave me, but when I found out they weren’t mine, I felt betrayed and banished her and the children; I was hurt when I saw them crying; it wasn’t their fault, but they had to pay for their mother’s crime.
Soon, I was wearing black shorts and a shirt; I hopped into my black Camry and zoomed to Jack’s house, which is a twenty-minute ride. I didn’t want to drive but had no choice; all my domestic staff were working, and I didn’t want to disturb them.
When I got to Jack’s house, I saw him and his wife making out by the door; it was a lovely sight because Jack was initially not a man of love. Rather, he was a man of war till he met Emma, his mate.
I cleared my throat and jolted both of them. Back to reality.
“What the fuck? Are you for real right now?” Jack asked, and I could see the anger on his face; he removed his hands from his wife’s butt to give me a proper angry stare.
“Did I… did I cock block you? ” I asked Emma, and she rolled her eyes in response.
“Don’t fucking say that again,” she said and went inside the house angrily, leaving Jack and I alone.
“What the hell, man? Today is our anniversary, and I promised her no work today, only for you to show up,” Jack said, as we walked towards his swimming pool.
I felt angry at myself for disturbing his quiet moment with his wife; Jack was always working for both of us because I am the Alpha; I worked when it pleased me.
“I’m so sorry man, I’ll head out now,” I said, hoping he would ask me to stay, and if he doesn’t, I’ll just go home and think about Catherine throughout the night.
“What the hell brought you here, don’t get me angry?” He retorted, making a smile creep to the corner of my lips.
“Okay, firstly, are you not going to see how Emma is feeling about all this? ” I asked, concerned about his marriage, I don’t want to be the cause of their divorce.
“Trust me, I can’t face her anger right now until she cools down, and while she is cooling down, tell me what the fuck brought you to my house this night when most of my domestic staff are sleeping,” he said, sitting beside the swimming pool and dipping his legs into the pool, I did the same thing.
“Catherine is my second chance, mate, man,” I said as he handed me a bear, Without wasting much time, I opened the bear and gulped a sustainable amount down my throat.
“Is this some kind of joke? Why will the moon goddess be playing games like that?” Jake said, dropping his bear on the floor, he could not believe what he was hearing, and I don’t blame him; it was very hard to believe.
“I don’t know, man, that’s how it is now; my mate is someone I abandoned Seven years back,” I replied to his question, gulping down more of the Bear.
“Has she felt the mate bond, or is this one-sided?” he asked, and that was when I realized that she might have felt the mate bond, so this won’t be as hard as it is.
“I am certain she had felt it, because she placed her hand on my chest this morning,” I said, touching my chest again, feeling her hands on it.
“Then what the fuck are you done here? Go and talk to her and sort things out, Mr man,” Jack said harshly as he got out of the pool.
“Fuck, you are a genius; thank you so much, man,” I said, as he shook his hand.
I hurried out of Jack’s house and headed to my house, within twenty minutes, I was at my house.
“I’m just going to ask her if she felt the mate bond for me, and we will sort things out because she won’t want to get married to me,” I assured myself as I left my car and headed towards my house when I heard sounds of water splashing.
I walked towards the swimming pool, and the sound of the splashing water became louder; this scenario had happened before when a member of the Hoang pack came through the swimming pool and killed more than half of my domestic staff.
My wolf was already getting ready to attack as I approached the swimming pool.
“Why the fuck are you sneaking around,” Catherine said as she came out of the swimming pool; my racing heart felt at peace, finding out it was not an enemy.
“Why are you still awake? You are supposed to be resting in your room,” I half yelled as I approached her; she was wearing a bikini, and almost all of her body was exposed, making her lose composure. Luckily for me, she tied her towel around her chest.
“I couldn’t sleep, been thinking,” she said, using another towel to dry her wet hair.
She must have been thinking about the mate bond, and I knew that was what she would be doing because she has a potential husband in Chicago, who she doesn’t love but respect.
“Yes, I was thinking about our mate bond as well, what are we going to do?” I asked and she looked at me in confusion, making me wonder if I had said something wrong.
“What mate bond?” She asked, laughing sarcastically.
“Did you feel a mate bond with me?” I replied to her question with a question, my voice filled with uncertainty.
“No I didn’t,” she said, making me confused.
