CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
BURKE’S POV
The room was quiet as I held the poison in my hand; I was certain that it was the poison because I saw how Harley fidgeted when I stared at it initially; I am very good at reading people’s emotions.
I knew my sister had something to do with poisoning her but I wasn’t sure, Ava is not capable of murder, when I saw Catherine, she was bleeding from her eyes, nose, and mouth and Ava couldn’t stand the sight of blood, so she would have screamed when she saw the blood, or she would have fainted.
“What do you think you are holding smart ass,” Harley said, and I knew the game she was playing.
I did not know what I was holding, but I knew it was poison based on their reaction and how frightened they looked as I held the gun.
“I’m holding a poison, Harley; I’m not stupid,” I said to her, and she held her mouth in surprise like she had not seen that bottle before.
“That is not mine; I’m just observing the bottle; that is where I keep my Serum; what the fuck is this about Burke?” She asked, with tears in her eyes for a moment; I forgot Harley was a great drama queen.
“I know you hate me, Burke, besides all the love I have showered on you, but that doesn’t mean I should be framed and taken to the north Turret for what I know nothing of,” She continued, as she looked at Ava, who was already crying. Ava always falls for her dramas, probably that was why she could almost get Catherine killed.
“Don’t tell me you wanted to get rid of my best friend Burke,” Ava asked, with tears in her eyes, she walked towards Harley and held her passionately.
“Why the fuck would I want to frame Harley? I am the Alpha; if I want to get rid of her, I can do it without framing her, Ava,” I said, and Ava turned to me with a question in her eyes.
“How then did you know that the bottle contained poison when she initially kept her serum there?” Ava asked and I did not know how to answer them.
Shit, I thought I knew the game they were playing, and it seems like they are better at it; if I tell them it was just a guess, they would not even believe it.
“Because it’s obvious, do you think I’ll hurt Catherine?” I asked, and the hurt in Harley’s face was undeniable, but I didn’t care.
“You were the first to see her in that bloody state, how are we expected to believe?” Harley asked as she folded her hand below her breast.
“Are you accusing your Alpha of attempted murder?” I asked, with my voice sounding like thunder; I was getting angry, and my inner wolf was almost losing control because my fingernail was getting longer as I was about to transform.
“Stop, Burke,” I heard Catherine’s voice, and immediately, I came back to normal; that had never happened to me before; not even my ex-wife could stop me from transforming.
I turned to my side, and I saw Catherine there, with her tiny hand holding my chest in place and her other hand around my waist; she looked at me with pleading eyes, and my heart softened immediately; the anger I once felt was gone.
“Did Catherine just calm you down?” Ava asked, surprised, she had already taken a sword to defend herself If I had eventually transformed. It was rather strange that Catherine calmed me down, even I knew that.
“I told you to stay on your bed, why did you come here,” I asked Catherine in a hushed tone, ignoring Ava’s question.
“So you can do something stupid huh, I told you I couldn’t remember very well, the only face I saw was Ava, I didn’t say you should accuse her,” Catherine scolded, I wanted to give her an excuse when she raised her hands, meaning I wasn’t permitted to talk and go my surprise, I kept quiet.
“I know I said Ava poisoned me, but that was all my brain was telling me; at that moment, we have found the culprit,” She said, pointing to another of my maids, which was rather surprising.
“How do you know she poisoned you, Catherine?” I asked, and she rolled her eyes when she heard me call her name in full.
“She confessed by herself, so do not take her to the north Turret,” Catherine said, with pleading eyes.
I gave Catherine a weak smile of assurance that I wouldn’t be taking her to the north Turret, but the truth is that I don’t believe the maid was the poisoner.
“Why then did you plant, the poison in Harley’s room,” I said, shaking the bottle of poison in my hand.
The maid turned to look at Harley in confusion before looking back at me in fear.
“I… I… I wanted to frame her,” The maid said, looking to the ground; I knew there was something off; why are all my domestic staff doing Harley’s bidding? That was the only question that was popping into my head.
“Why would you want to frame her?” I asked further, and the maid looked at Harley again before looking back at me; the maid was still kneeling when she crept toward me.
“I wanted your house to be a mess; I am from Hoang pack,” She replied to my question as she held my right leg.
I shoved her off my leg harshly, giving a sustainable amount of space between us.
I went to Catherine’s height and whispered into her ears.
“I don’t believe this confession,”
“Neither do I” She whispered back, giving me a convincing smile, which meant I should trust her.
“Take her to the dungeon,” I said as my guards raised her and took her out of Harley’s room.
Catherine and I walked behind the guards.
We entered Catherine’s room and I locked the door behind us.
“Thank you,” Catherine said, placing both palms on my chest, and immediately my inner wolf started screaming,
“Mate, Mate”
