CHAPTER SIXTEEN
BURKE’S POV
I lay on my bed, tossing uncontrollably on it, my mind still on the fact that I would have lost Catherine a few days back.
Getting Catherine back to the pack was not part of my intention, I was happy when she left and hated what I put her through.
Every day, I hated myself for giving her such terrible heartbreak, although it wasn’t my intention.
I remembered my coronation day like it was yesterday, not because it was my coronation but because that was the last time I had seen Catherine, and I avoided her teary eyes.
“What are you thinking of boy,” My father asked, sitting on the edge of my bed, I had not realized when he entered the room, because I was lost in thoughts.
“Knock Ethan, you need to Knock”, I said, without any emotion, I was never grown to call my father by his first name, we were once close, but it changed on my coronation day.
“I’m still your father Burke,” his husky voice came with a sharp pain, he hated that I always addressed him using his first name.
“Yh, and the reason I’m this messed up,” I retorted, with my coronation day flashing in my memory, the anger increased even more.
“I did not know Sereca would cheat, the moon goddess chose her as your mate,” My father tried to explain again, that is what he has been doing for the past seven years.
“But you know I wanted Catharine, yet you forced me to get married to Sereca, Catherine has hated me for seven years and loved you, the very person that tried to kill her,” my voice was low, I did not want Catherine or anyone to hear that, especially Catherine. She loves my father with all her heart and even takes him as a father. if she heard he threatened to kill her, she would be heartbroken.
My father had threatened to kill Catherine, that morning after our nightstand. The only option I had was to marry Sereca. My father and I have one thing in common, we act on our threat. Watching Catherine die because of my selfish desires would kill me, so I had to marry Sereca.
From that day onward, I had always hated my father and everything about him. He was even happy when I told him Catherine wasn’t here again.
“How many times do I have to apologize and keep your voice down, if she hears you, she won’t treat me again, besides you can have her now since you aren’t with any woman,” he said in a hushed tone, with pleading eyes.
“You are freaking selfish, you made me bring her here to treat you when you knew she was happy in Chicago living a beautiful life,” I said, almost yelling. I never wanted Catherine back in the pack, because it would complicate her life. My father begged and even took the matter to the councilmen, and now she is here, trying not to get killed by some mysterious person.
“Take this as a second chance to get that back, Burke I’m sorry,” my father said before leaving my room without saying why he got here initially. I did not call him back to tell me his reason for barging into my room, that was the least of my problem.
I stayed on my bed, still thinking of Catherine when I heard a knock on the door, with a groan, I yelled;
“Get in,”
“I was hoping you would say that,” Catherine’s voice came through and I turned to look at her.
She was wearing a blue crop top and a blue jean as well. She looked good every time she wore Blue, her hair was laid down, and she wasn’t wearing my makeup but she was pretty as hell.
Her lips were shining pink, as they smiled at me, making the dimples on both sides of her cheeks obvious. I hated that I had hurt this woman and would never be in her good book again, because she hates me.
“Burke,” I heard her yell my name, and my consciousness came back.
“How long have you been Calling my name?” I asked, so I would know how long I wasn’t conscious.
“For about five minutes,” she replied with a giggle, as she sat on the chair opposite my bed, revealing more than half of her laps, I tried my best to keep my eyes on her face.
“Is there a problem?” I asked rudely, because that is the only way I would be able to get my feelings over her, it hasn’t been working though but I know I’ll get over her soon.
“Yes, firstly Harley wishes you well, she says she loves you and would want your wedding to be quick,” she said with a smile, she must have noticed the disgust on my face, because I didn’t bother to hide it.
Even after telling Catherine the pack that killed her parents, she still did not want to let of Harley, she says Harley is not like her pack, which is a lie, my father started getting sick when Harley and Ava became best of friends.
There’s something fishy but I can’t point fingers, because I have no evidence. All my family loves her, and they feel I hate her because I’m broken.
“I gave you a clear instruction to stay away from her Catherine,” I said sternly, I hate calling her full name but she had warned me not to shorten her name, that we weren’t friends any longer.
“And I did not abide by your instruction, how is that supposed to be a problem, Burke?” She asked, folding her hands beneath her breasts, she gets stubborn sometimes which is always infuriating.
“Catherine she tried to kill you, I won’t forgive myself if anything happens to you,” I said and regretted what I said minutes later, it sounded like vulnerability which is the beginning of weakness.
We fell silent for some time, realizing how awkward my confession sounded.
“I think I have found the cure,” she burst out, and I looked at her in surprise.
