CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
BURKE’S POV
I did not know whether to be excited at the news of Catherine finding a cure or whether I should be sad about it.
Catherine coming back to the pack was never my intention but regardless, I have always looked forward to forming a bond with her even if we don’t end up together because she is with another man.
My manner of approach to her might be considered rude but the truth is that I don’t know how to tell her that we should let bygones be bygones, So I always end up being rude to her, making her hate me more.
“Did you hear me, Burke, this might be the cure for Ethan, I have a strong feeling it would work, I want to get back to my kids,” she said, making me feel selfish.
To be fair, I am selfish and won’t apologize for that, this was the only way to feel Catherine’s presence again. Although I also wanted to see her kids again, I feel there would be a strong connection between us, I don’t know why.
I looked at Catherine and saw how sad her eyes were. She missed her children. I had always ensured that they wrote to her every weekend, but that was not enough, she is a mother and needs to see her kids.
“Okay, let’s check it out, but firstly has it ever worked for any illness,” I asked, considering my father’s health. I hate him, but he is still my father, his health is my priority.
Catherine gave me silence as an answer and I understood that she had not used it before, my father was going to be her first trial, and my anger grew immediately, knowing she wanted to use my father as one of her experiments.
“Does my father look like a Laboratory rat to you?” I yelled, no one could hear me except for Catherine because my door was soundproof.
“Don’t tell me okay, I want to find a cure and get back to my children, how would you know it would work if you don’t try it out first?” She yelled back, placing her tray that contained medical appliances on the floor, I had not noticed she held a tray.
“My father can be an experiment, he is the former Alpha of the Crescent pack, he can’t demine him to a lab rat,” he said, trying to control my anger.
Catherine looked at me in disbelief, and I wondered what was going on in her head.
“He is not a lab rat, but this might be the only thing that may cure him, and if Ethan says he doesn’t want to be involved in it, there is no problem, I’ll figure out another way,” She said, looking at me, she was tried to searching for a cure, I could see it.
“I tried it on a lab rat, it healed it, but this medication I made has never been used on a human, but let’s just give it a try,” she continued and I nodded my head.
“So how would you tell Ethan, you have a drug that might kill or heal him,” I asked, getting off the bed for the first time since today.
“He already knows, he was supposed to tell you but you did not give him the opportunity,” she said, picking the tray from the ground.
It was then I realized that was the reason he had come to see me in the morning.
It did not take long before Catherine and Ethan were inside Ethan’s room for the treatment, leaving Ava, Harley and me wait outside patiently.
Ava’s eyes were red and puffy, she had been crying since my father had started the experiment, and she was scared to lose my Father.
“I don’t want to lose him,” she said Aloud, and Harley continued sympathizing with her and also gave me filthy looks each time Ava turned away.
“So what is the treatment about?” I heard Harley ask, I wasn’t sure who she was referring to, so I did not respond to her question.
“Burke, I’m asking you a question,” she said angrily, but trying to keep her cool.
“Catherine made it up, I don’t know more about the medication,” I said and her face turned into a frown upon hearing me call Catherine’s name, which was not something weird. She hated Catherine but Catherine couldn’t see it.
“Would you love to go hunting soon,” she asked and realized her question was ridiculous and horrible.
“Wolves don’t get to hunt, that’s something you should not forget,” I said, and enjoyed the embarrassment that washed her face immediately, but she did not end the forced discussion we were having which was upsetting.
“How did you and Catherine meet?” She asked, and I knew Ava had already told her all about it, she was just trying to bring up a conversation.
“She used to be my best friend till I married a cheat from Hoang Pack,” I retorted, with my face buried in my palms, the memory of how I found out my children weren’t mine came flushing in my memory.
“Do you love her?” Harley asked, and she was straightforward about it, she did not mind how inappropriate it appeared.
“That’s none of your business dear, but I love Catherine, as her friend and sister,” I retorted, and it felt like I had just told a lie, I did not know what my feelings for Catherine were, or what they had been then, I only knew we were once friends.
“What about me Burke, who am I to you?” She asked the question I have always dreaded.
I chose not to give her a reply because I had nothing to say that would be beneficial to her, it would hurt her, so much.
Luckily, Before she could speak up again, a maid came from inside Ethan’s room with blood-stained in her hands and clothes, and she was weeping.
I ran to meet the maid to ask questions and Catherine came out immediately, panting heavily.
“How is he?” I inquired, almost in an impatient manner.
“He isn’t breathing,” Catherine said, and the room fell silent immediately.
