CHAPTER FIFTEEN
CATHERINE’S POV
I stayed on the bed for hours after Ethan had left the room, trying to make myself believe that it wasn’t Harley who planted the poison on my dress because she sounded genuine.
“My life is at stake here,” I said aloud.
Soon the door to Burke’s room opened without permission and Harley rushed in, carrying a tray of fruits.
“I heard what happened and I think that maid sucks,” she said, placing the tray of fruits on the table, and rushing towards the bedside to sit next to me.
It was then I realized she was still as surprised as I was, she had not planted the poison there, rather it was the maid who did it.
“I hate the fact that she is from my pack, making me lose some of that trust I have gained from Burke.
I inhaled deeply before stretching my hand, to get from apples she brought, I was starving already.
“Burke can be difficult sometimes but one thing is certain, he will come around” I replied and the smile on her face increased, making her look pretty, I had not realized that Harley was this pretty, because she was always wearing a frown.
“Do you mind if I ask you a question?” My voice tried to be polite and void of any form of curiosity, but deep down I was overwhelmed with curiosity and did not want her to know, for no reason in particular.
“Sure, I’ll love that” she replied, getting comfortable on the bed, making me wonder if she had ever been to Burke’s room.
“He sucks, he is a rude asshole, who treats you like thrash, why do you still love him?” I asked and regretted my question when I saw the hurt in her eyes, I was reminding her of her failed relationship with her husband-to-be. There was silence for some time before I decided to speak up.
“I’m so sorry for the rude question I just asked…”
“You are right, please don’t apologize,” she said, interrupting me. I was glad the question did not make her feel inferior.
“Burke was never like this,” she said, and I knew that was right. Sometimes I miss the Burke I knew before although this new Burke is more handsome and has the perfect body. The kindness, and lightheartedness were already gone, Burke was very different now, I agree.
“Sereca brought the beast in him and he hates women very much, except for you though,” she said, and I could hear the pain in her voice. For the first time since I came here, I hated the fact that he treats me better than her.
“I have always loved him, even before he married Sereca, and I think I’m his second chance mate, even if the moon goddess has shown us yet, I’ll wait for Burke, and I don’t know why I love him,” she said, inhaling deeply. She placed her hands on her thigh playing with the dress she was wearing.
“What about your pack? They hate Burke for locking Sereca in the tower of North Turret, how would they take it? Or would I say “How are they taking it?” I asked further because my curiosity knew no bounds since she was already opening up to me.
I took a bite from the apples and waited patiently for her to speak up.
“They don’t know about Burke and me, at least not yet, I intend to keep this a secret till the moon goddess confirms that I am his second chance mate,” She said, smiling.
“You are really smart,” I said with a chuckle.
Soon Burke barged into his room to see both of us talking and laughing, his mood changed instantly.
“Who gave you permission to enter my room, Harley?” He asked, folding his arms in his chest.
“She is your wife-to-be, have you forgotten?” I asked, angrily. My eyes were red and my hands were shaking. Harley is just a victim of one-sided love and does not deserve to be treated this way, at least not by the person she loves.
“Catherine please don’t get involved, you know nothing about what’s going on” Burke fired back at me, speaking rudely, although he did not raise his voice.
“I came to see how Catherine was doing, I will leave now” She replied getting off the bed, it was then I realized that she had never been to Burke’s room.
“How did this man get so cold-hearted like this,” I asked myself.
It did not take long for Harley to leave the room taking the fruits she brought, because Burke asked her to leave with the fruits.
“What the hell is wrong with you? That girl loves you like crazy,” I yelled after Harley had left.
“She is from Hoang, why would I ever marry from that pack again? If the moon goddess chose her as my second mate I will remain single without children,” he said, folding his arms.
“Have you also been this dramatic?” I asked, trying not to chuckle.
“Have you always been this argumentative,” He answered my question with a question.
“Well for the record, yes, I thought you knew that,” I replied to his question sitting upright with his duvet around my chest.
“They are not to be trusted, she is not to be trusted, get that fact right for once,” he said, sitting down on the chair that was opposite the bed, giving me a better view of him.
“You are just pained Burke, the girl is not a harm, instead she is someone in love,” My voice sounded irritated as I spoke, and I rolled my eyes to show my irritation. I did not know Burke was this judgemental.
“The maid that planted the poison on your dress, was from Hoang pack, which I did not know and Harley was best of friends with her,” He said, trying to make Harley the villain but she wasn’t. Burke was the villain here.
“How is Harley at fault?” I asked, still defending his worst enemy.
“That pack killed your parents, Catherine,” he yelled and my heart stopped immediately.
