CHAPTER FOURTEEN
CATHERINE’S POV
I opened my eyes and found myself lying in a bed that wasn’t mine, with my head pounding.
I tried sitting up, but the pain in my head made me glued to the bed.
“My head,” I said out loud, holding my head with my hands.
“You are awake, you gave everybody a heart attack, you know right?” I heard Burke’s voice, I had not realized anyone was in the room.
Burke was standing in front of his bed, still wearing his suit except that the suit jacket was off and the hand of the shirt was drawn up to his elbow. He was holding a cup filled with wine.
He had worry written all over his face making me wonder what had happened because my memory was hazy.
“How are you feeling?” Burke asked, coming to sit at the edge of the bed.
“My head hurts badly” I replied to his question and he immediately handed over some drugs so I could take them, I took them from his hands but I didn’t swallow them.
I’m skeptical about taking just any kind of drugs, probably because I have been to a medical school and I’m a doctor for that matter.
“I don’t just take random drugs, Burke,” I said to him, rolling my eyes, and making my head hurt even more.
“Are you sure?” He asked, seeing how hurt I appeared.
“Fuck it,” I whispered to myself before swallowing the drugs, the pain coming from my head was too much, so I had to swallow the drugs.
“What happened?” I asked, sitting up, the headache had reduced drastically.
Suddenly Burke started coughing nervously, making me wonder what was wrong, until he used his hand to gesture to my chest, it was then I noticed that I was wearing only a bra.
“What the hell did you do?” I yelled, covering my chest with the duvet, Burke was still acting like a child who had not seen a woman without clothes before.
“I did not do anything, I may be rude but I’m not a pervert,” he replied to my question, and I was glad he admitted he was a rude asshole.
Burke stood up from the bed and started walking around aimlessly in the room that I suspected to be his, because all the furniture was black, and the room was beautifully decorated with black, the king-sized bed was soft, and I could lay a full day on it without getting tired.
“Don’t get too comfortable in my bed,” He said chuckling, confirming that my guess was right, we were in his room.
“What happened?” I asked, ignoring the praises he made of his room.
“I ordered a maid to give you a dress, who delivered it to you?” He asked, dropping the glass cup he had in his hand on his reading table.
“Harley delivered it to me, is there a problem?” I asked, trying to reach the cup of wine he was once drinking.
Without allowing me to waste time on that, he grabbed it and handed it over to me. Burke was getting surprisingly good to me, and it makes me suspect he has a motive.
“Harley?” He questioned, surprised.
“Yes, I was surprised to see her as well, but that wasn’t that most of it” I replied to his question, before sipping the wine again.
“What then happened,” he asked, unable to hide his curiosity.
“She asked me to be her friend, which was surprising,” I replied to Burke, laughing but he did not laugh back, he still had seriousness written all over his face.
“Don’t trust her,” Burke said, and before I could ask any further questions, he rushed out of the room, leaving me clueless.
“Are you serious?” I yelled after him.
“Yes, he certainly is Cat,” I heard Ethan’s voice say, as he entered Burke’s room with a walking aid.
“Ethan, why did you leave your bed, I was coming to test another cure for your illness, I hope it is the final straw,” I said, trying to sit up when I remembered I was not putting on something decent.
“You got hurt, I had to come over, that’s what you do for me too, remember?” He said, sitting down at the edge of the bed with me.
I smiled at him, as he got comfortable on Burke’s bed.
“I’m sorry you had to go through all this stress because of me, I apologize,” he said, gripping his walking aid tightly.
“No Ethan, it’s not your fault, don’t blame yourself for it,” I said, wondering why he was apologizing.
Ethan started giving me a disbelieving look, making me confused.
“What, why are you giving me that look?” I asked, and he turned his head away from me.
“Nothing dear, never mind,” he replied to my question, and I knew it was a lie, Luckily I was talking to Ethan, who is not good at keeping secrets like the rest of the Michealson, he would spill the beans with little pressure.
“I left my kids in Chicago against my will, to come and get you treated, I have been here for two weeks now, trying different cures that were to no avail, why would you want to keep important things from me?” I asked, trying to blackmail him emotionally, and thank the gods it was working, I didn’t even have to push further.
“I’m sorry Catherine, Burke won’t be happy, he would like to tell you first, but know that Burke will always protect you, even if it costs his life,” Ethan said, trying to get up, he was about to leave the room without telling me what’s happening.
“If you don’t tell me, I don’t think I forgive you,” I said, and Ethan turned back immediately, his gray hair swinging to his forehead.
“Don’t make me go against Burke’s wish,” he pleaded.
“What about my wish? Why are you all selfish?” I asked, getting tired, they were very selfish, especially Burke.
“No Cat…, if you must know, a poison was planted in the dress you were given, the poison would make you die. Meaning your stay here isn’t safe” he said, and quickly left the room before I could ask further questions.
I was still in shock, and Harley gave me that dress.
Did she plan to kill me?
