CHAPTER TEN
CATHERINE’S POV
I have been rolling on my king-sized bed since, thinking of what happened back there in the garden, making me feel embarrassed all over again.
“Gosh” I yelled against the pillow, that I had initially buried my face in, I hated the fact that he could do that to me and make me feel like a fool all over again.
I faced the ceiling, wondering if I still had feelings for Burke.
“No, I hate him,” I said aloud, trying to convince myself, even if it was not convincing enough.
“Would I have kissed him and cheated on Jaxon?” I asked myself, guilt filled my eyes, and I felt like a bad person for attempting to cheat on Jaxon.
Suddenly I heard a knock on the door, distracting me from my thoughts, I stood up from my bed to get the door.
I opened the door only to see Burke and Harley, standing and holding hands passionately.
“I thought he said he didn’t like her,” I said to myself in a low tone, which could be audible to only me, or so I thought.
They kept looking at me in silence making me panic, my mind went to Ethan and I wondered if he was alright.
“Is Ethan okay?” I asked, confused at their sudden strange behavior.
“Yes he is okay, I just wanted to formally introduce you to Harley, my sister’s friend,” Burke said, acting like we had not discussed her earlier.
“And his wife-to-be, you can call me Ava too, Ava and I are very close and we use each other’s name sometimes,” She said, with a smile, stretching her hand towards me for a handshake.
I accepted her handshake and wondered why they were like we had not met before.
“Okay Harley, you can leave us now,” Burke said and Harley turned to give him a worried stare. I could see the pain and anger that filled her eyes.
“Why should I leave? there is nothing you can’t say in front of me Burke, I’m going to be your wife,” She said, still trying to pretend to smile like what Burke was doing was not something hurtful. She was trying to avoid a scene.
Burke kept her silent, I know how rude Burke can be at times and Harley noticed he would not say a word till she left.
“Oh, I almost forgot, I have to go shopping with Ava. I’ll catch up with you later,” she said, with humiliation in her voice.
She tiptoed and tried to kiss Burke on his left cheek, but Instead, Burke moved away from her leaving her lips to hang in the air.
“I forgot you hate kisses,” she said, feeling embarrassed, I hated how Burke was making her feel.
“Bye,” she said cooly, Harley gave me a deadly look before leaving us alone.
“Can I come in?” Burke asked, and I realized he had been standing outside all this while.
“No, if there’s a problem, you can say it here and now” I replied to his question. I was still feeling embarrassed about what happened previously, allowing him inside my room would not be a good idea, I’m not ready to cheat on Jaxon, who has always been good and supportive to me.
“Don’t tell me this is about what happened in the garden, I’m here to discuss something important with you” he said, dipping his hands inside the pocket of his trousers.
“If you have something to say, Burke, I’ll be in my room Burke, bye,” I said, shutting the door in his face.
I did not know if he had left because after shutting the bed, I went back to my bed with huge curiosity.
“What was he going to say?” I asked myself, regretting telling him to leave initially.
I allowed my emotions to take the better part of me and now, I want to know the reason he wanted to talk with me.
But I could not bring myself to open the door or tell the maid to send for him, it would be a slap on my face, and I would be disgusted when I saw the satisfaction he would wear on his face.
I laid on my bed for ten minutes, before deciding to open the door and let him in, but unfortunately, he had already left when I opened the door.
“I need to Burke, right away,” I said to one of the maids that was passing by.
“Lady Ava instructed us not to take orders from you, mam,” The maid said before leaving. I knew immediately that she was talking about Harley.
I did not get angry though. She thinks I’m here to take Burke away from her, which is kind of disgusting, I have vowed never to go back to Burke again, and I won’t.
I wondered why Harley wants Burke so badly, even though he treats her like a thrash. Although I don’t blame Burke for his actions, he is still vexed about his ex-wife.
I wanted to call the maid back when Ava appeared at my front with a frown on her face, making me wonder what wrong I did.
“Is there a problem Ava?” I asked, confused, as she refused to say a word.
“What did Burke discuss with you that he had to excuse Harley, his wife-to-be?” She asked angrily, although I was angry about her question as well.
“I dismissed Burke so I don’t know what he wanted to talk about,” I said, trying not to sound rude.
It is just surprising that the little girl I once nurtured was talking to me rudely because of a man. When she did not speak further, I decided to close my door, but she placed her feet between the door making me unable to close it.
“I’m sorry about how I sounded” she apologized, giving me a weak smile that appeared fake, I returned her smile.
“The Hoang Pack are attacking us, take cover,” a Guard yelled.
Before I could even blink, I felt someone push me into the room and lock it.
I turned only to see Burke breathing heavily and he was bleeding from his right arm.
“What happened, Burke?” I asked, confused.
