CHAPTER NINE
CATHERINE’S POV
I haven’t seen Burke for two days now. On a normal day, that wouldn’t have bothered me but the threat Ava, his wife-to-be made a few days ago, made me want to talk to him.
“Bring the bowl closer,” I said to one of the maids called Susan, who assisted me in plucking herbs to cure Ethan’s Affliction.
The Affliction does not have a cure, so I decided to use native herbs to try and cure him. Crescent Pack had a lot of herbs and plants, so searching for a cure would probably not be a problem, I just wanted to hurry up so I could go back to my kids.
“Lady Ava, says you should be careful when rooting out that plant,” Susan said when I started uprooting an herb called oregano.
Hearing her name again reminded me of how she presented herself as Burke’s wife-to-be like I was going to snatch her man. Ava kept giving me angry eyes, although she sounded friendly when she spoke, she also sounded like she would cut my throat if I mess with Burke.
Her reaction made me wonder what Burke had told his wife-to-be about me, and that was the reason I had been requesting to see him.
Ava had restricted some things for me in Burke’s mansion, starting from the plate I can use and the once I could not, and now the plant I could cut and the once I can’t.
“Tell her I’ll cut it anyhow I like, for Ethan’s cure” I retorted, and regretted it a few seconds later, I was supposed to be mad at Ava and not Susan, a maid who is only doing her job.
“I heard you wanted to see me,” I heard Burke’s voice say from behind me when I was already done plucking the oregano herb. I scoffed before telling the maid to excuse us.
When it was only Burke and I that were in the garden, I turned to look at him angrily, and his expression changed to that of surprise immediately.
“Is something wrong?” He asked confused, as he folded his hands under his hardened chest which was hidden inside the black shirt he had on.
“Yes Burke, what the hell did you tell your wife-to-be about me huh?” I asked placing the bowl filled with herbs on the floor. I wished I had given it to the maid before dismissing her.
Burke looked at me confused, looking ignorant about the accusation, he was always good at faking ignorance, although the ignorance did not seem fake.
“What the hell are you talking about, I don’t have any wife-to-be,” he replied to me with a question, and I felt stupid immediately, probably the lady was lying.
“Who is Ava then?” I regretted asking him that question because he stared at me like I was some jealous girlfriend.
“She is my sister’s friend, and her name is Harley, we call her Ava though, because she had a lot of attachment to my sister,” He said, and it made sense for a while.
I was wondering why they had the same name and behaved alike, although when the maid said Ava, I always knew whom they were referring to.
“So Harley met me some night ago, and she said she was your wife-to-be,” I said, wanting him to explain more, because Harley was really into him when we spoke.
“She wants to be my wife, but I don’t want to have a wife, at least not yet,” he said, looking at the bowl of herbs, with a hint of sadness in his eyes. It was difficult to read through him, but I could still recognize the sadness.
“You know you need a Luna who can bear you kids right?” I asked, and he shook his head, disapproving of my statement.
“I don’t need a Luna dear, I only need children, and a son who can become Alpha when I’m old,” he said, picking up the bowl of herbs.
How can I tell him that he already has a son, two sons for that matter, after all he has done to me? Probably this was karma coming for him, and I would not interfere with karma.
“I wish you success in finding someone to give you children,” I said, snatching the bowl of herbs from his hands.
Immediately I saw another plant that could be of great use for the treatment of the Affliction, I went over to pluck out the plant while Burke walked behind me.
“You know you can give me children huh?” He asked, making me cough anxiously.
I wasn’t sure if I heard him right, or if he was playing around the way he used to do seven years ago.
“Come again” I demanded, plucking the plant from its root, my cheeks were already flushing red and I hated it greatly.
“It was just kidding, I know you hate me and don’t want them to have anything to do with me, Besides you are engaged to another man,” he said, making my heart stop beating faster than normal, although he was wrong.
I don’t hate Burke, for seven years I have tried to despise him, but it was all fruitless, although I love the fact he thinks I hate him.
“So how is Ethan’s medication going?” He asked, but he didn’t appear concerned about his father’s health, he acted like he was doing this out of obligation as the first son of his father.
“It’s not going so great, I have tried three different medications to no avail,” I said, standing to my feet.
I turned around only to stumble on Burke’s chest, which was the same height as me.
I cleared my throat and tried to move back, But held me in place by slipping his hands around my waist, increasing my heart rate once again.
She drew me closer to him, and my hands were placed on his chest. I wanted to pull away, but I couldn’t.
He bent over, and our lips were almost touching before he spoke again,
“You are just like other women who cheat on their partner”
After saying that, he pushed me to the ground, and he made his way out of the garden leaving me dumbfounded.
“What the hell just happened?” I asked myself, unable to catch my breath.
