EVOLET
From a peaceful stroll to a shocking daylight banishment of my best friend’s family… I was left blown away by the way things escalated right before my eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked Derby, holding both of her hands in mine.
We sat outside her home while Cadell and Trent where inside, carrying out justice with the place.
Derby lowered her head shamefully and said, “I’m sorry, Eve. I was ashamed to tell someone about my problems. It’s something I’ve been battling for years and… it was hard to get myself out of that shell and learn to stand my ground. When you have a family who doesn’t give a damn about your feelings, but wants to use you for their own selfish needs… It becomes rough.”
My heart sank on seeing Derby’s dull face. Her sadness made me weak.
“Goddess, and I thought they were your actual parent. Even the guy who always cheers with your father, I mean your Uncle, acted like a family member who loves you dearly. I never knew they were so cruel.”
“That’s how they act in public to deceive everyone. They don’t want people to think they are cruel but loving towards me. It’s all a lie. They always force me to do what they want, taking away my rights to freedom. But that’s when I met you at the mansion during registrations for the hunt.” She lifted her head at me, with a smile crawling to the side of her lips.
“You where with Fiona at that time, and I watched how she comforted you when you looked so troubled.”
I recalled that day. It’s the same period Fiona shattered my heart by showing her true colors.
“I felt so sad and envious of you two. Even when your Mom showed up, despite the issues you two were having, I could see that love in her eyes for you. Something I never got after losing my own parents.”
“Derby,” I called softly, feeling her pains.
“I wanted someone who would also look up to me when they feel lonely and know that I’d always be there for them when they need comfort. I also wanted a bestie who would bring out my crazy side without me having to hide it. And the Goddess granted my wish. She made you my best friend.” She smiled, tightening her grip on my hands.
I felt touched hearing Derby say all this. My bestie has been suffering for long with a big smile on her face, and I didn’t even know.
I feel terrible.
“Do forgive me for keeping you in the dark. I didn’t have the mind to open up. I felt quite embarrassed about my life and chose to keep it to myself.”
“Even if you had mustered the courage to tell me your problems, I would never mocked you, Derby,” I said, pulling her close for an embrace.
“You are my best friend, you crazy girl. I am nothing like Fiona or the others. This is why the heavens made us besties. It’s because we understand each other.”
Derby sniffed in my embrace, squeezing me tight. “Thanks, Eve,” she appreciated, burying her head on me.
I patted her on the back, feeling so happy to see that her problems were finally solved.
“Now I understand why you acted so crazy that day.” I chuckled, flashing to that period when she saw Trent for the first time.
My girl really meant it when she said she hardly shows any interest to men, and that’s because of her greedy family. They made her see the opposite gender as nothing special, until she laid her eyes on Trent and felt a spark for the first time.
“My baby girl got a crush on someone for the first time! Hurrah!”
“Shh! Not too loud,” Derby whispered, covering my mouth and looking at the door to see if the guys were coming. “You can’t allow Trent to know about it. Do you want him to run away like the last time?”
“What?” I laughed, finding Derby funny.
“You can’t be serious. So, all this time that you two have been seeing each other in the secret, you haven’t overcome this fear of Trent running away from you? I’m still surprised though. How did you get Trent on your side?” I asked.
Derby’s cheeks went swollen. She took one more look at the door, got to her feet, and pulled me away from the house. She got me to stand under the tree and said, ” I’m trying not to expose all my craziness to him. It hasn’t been easy for me, but I’m holding in. And also, I didn’t get Trent involved in my personal matter. He got himself involved on his own.”
“Wow,” I uttered, amused to hear this.
Derby shared how it all began and told me about the things Trent has been doing for her.
Everything sounded so sweet to my ears. I’m surprised the Alpha took an interest into Derby’s life and handled most of her problem without getting me involved.
This is so amazing. Could it be that Kitty now has a soft spot for Derby?
“Trent has always been there for me, Eve. He always makes sure I’m smiling. He even visits me for a sleepover and listens to my every word. Such a sweet guy,” Derby shared happily, looking back at the house to see Cadell and Trent stepping out together.
When Trent looked at our direction and waved at Derby, her cheeks flushed red. She waved back sillily and turned away, smiling harder than before.
Gosh! I think I’m going to explode It’s so beautiful to watch!
“Please Goddess, give Trent a sign! I am a hundred percent sure that Derby is the one he’s looking for. He just can’t see it!” I groaned in my mind, biting down on my lower lip.
The guys came over and suggested we leave for now. “We can work on this place later on, and transform it into Derby’s palace. How about that, D?” Trent asked Derby, wrapping his arm around her.
Her eyes popped skin at Trent’s action. She gulped down and boldly nodded, acting cool.
“Sweet. Let’s go,” Trent said with a smile, dropping his gaze on me.
I had a curve on my face while looking back at him. Seems he noticed something was cooking in my head because his grins faded off.
As we journeyed away from the place, Trent walked next to me, while Cadell and Derby moved ahead, talking to each other.
I was pleased to see Derby finally moving and talking freely. That’s when Trent voiced out to me, “I’m sorry, Evolet.” He apologized.
I turned to see his face and found Kitty unhappy.
“I kept the truth away from you. Derby was worried about the outcome and I had to support her wish,” he explained.
“That family of hers said some negative things about us, still she stood her ground protecting our name. I would have said something, but I wanted those cheapskates to get the punishment they deserved first.”
“And you did well by standing with Derby, Trent. You are a lifesaver, and I’m proud of you,” I praised him, taking his hand in my hold.
Trent stared at me with a glow on his face. He finally gave out a smile, feeling relieved.
“Thank you, Eve.”
“Don’t thank me. Thank the heavens for making you the man you are today. I guess that’s why you became the Alpha of your pack,” I winked, causing Trent to chuckle.
I wanted to ask Trent about his take on Derby so far, but knowing the kind of questions that would come after that, I just kept my lips shut, leaving everything for the heavens instead.
After all, if the Goddess was the one who brought them this far, I’m sure she’ll open Trent’s eyes to see it all.
.
That evening, Mom allowed Derby to stay over after learning about the horrible truth of her family. She made Derby feel like a part of our home, expressing her support to my friend.
That wasn’t the only thing that went down that evening. Mom suddenly shared something exciting with Derby and I, leaving us cheering in delight.
She wasn’t going to work that night, because she took a week break from her boss to spend some time with me.
“I felt having a family time together would be great. Maybe head to a whole new place outside Wolf Fall?”
“Outside? Yes!!” Derby and I screamed, dancing around the living room. The guys were also thrilled with the news and joined us in our madness.
It’s the first time Mom would make such a decision. I’ve always known her to be the lock away type, but now… She’s changing!
“I haven’t concluded on the place yet and you’re already jubilating,” Mom said, swaying her head at us.
Derby and I giggled, before sitting down to mention packs far away from Wolf Fall, that had amazing sites to visit.
But Mom didn’t look quite interested in those places. “How about Red Hills? I heard the pack gets prettier at night,” She suggested.
Remembering what went down at that place, I refused. “No, I don’t feel like visiting that place.”
“Oh, okay then. How about Brook Wave? I hear they have the best waterfall. It’s an attraction to behold,” Mom suggested again, finally giving us something we like.
Derby and I didn’t argue about it but accepted the idea.
“When are we going?” I asked out of curiosity.
“Tomorrow,” Mom responded, surprising us.
“Really? Can’t we go a day after tomorrow?” I asked, finding the timing quite short. But Mom remained on her decision, explaining why she chose that time. “I am too excited to wait, Eve. We leave in the morning and that’s final. Now you girls better get yourself ready. We are traveling!”
“HURRAH!” Derby screamed, hoping around.
I just smiled at this but gave in to Mom’s wish.
It’s not a bad idea. What harm can it bring?
The following morning, we were all set for our trip. Mom made sure I got the guys ready before we hit the road on… foot?
“Aren’t we getting a cab?” I asked, looking at all the empty vehicles that kept driving pass us.
“Oh, we will. I just want to attend to something real quick, then we can move.”
“Okay then. You’re the boss,” I joked, flowing with Mom’s vibe.
Soon, we arrived at Mom’s tailor, who didn’t look that happy to see us.
She grinned weirdly and asked my mother, dropping her gaze on Cadell and Trent, “Are you sure I can look after them in a week?” She pointed at the guys!
“Wait what?!” Derby and I exclaimed on realizing what Mom was doing.
“Yes, you can. I promise to tip you if you can keep Wolfy from eating the Kitty, okay?”
No way! Mom isn’t taking the guys along!
She wants to leave them here in Wolf Fall!
