Moreover… she couldn’t imagine how painful it would be for Nelson to see the original footage.
Callie took a deep breath. “Suit yourself. If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving now.”
She left without hesitation, surprising Marilyn. “Hey! Aren’t you going to beg me?”
Callie didn’t look back. “I’m not in the mood to entertain a spoiled princess.”
She walked around the corner to a secluded spot, took out a recording pen from her bag, and pressed pause.
Leaning against the cold wall, Callie couldn’t describe her feelings. Ever since she had been set up, she had become more cautious and recorded all her conversations. She hadn’t expected Marilyn to reveal so much crucial information.
But this couldn’t prove that Marilyn was behind it. Callie wanted to prove that she hadn’t been involved with Jaquan and that it was all a setup.
Back at Regan’s place, Eliza kept asking if she had been troubled.
Callie shook her head, her mind racing to figure out who was behind it all.
Owen? He was far away in Anbusea and couldn’t have orchestrated everything with such power. Ylosea was Nelson’s territory.
Someone from the Ellison family? But Marilyn’s disgrace wouldn’t benefit them. Who would benefit from this?
The neon lights blurred in Callie’s eyes as she fell into deep thought, finally pointing to Charlotte…
The one who stood to gain the most from all this was Charlotte!
But how could she have convinced so many people on her own?
Callie’s head throbbed. Just then, a traffic cop signaled her to stop at the intersection ahead.
The window rolled down, and a deep male voice said, “Show me your driver’s license.”
Callie found it and handed it over, surprised. “Malachi?”
Malachi, dressed in a traffic cop uniform, was also surprised. “Mrs. Oconnor?”
After checking the license and conducting an alcohol test, Malachi asked, “Where are you headed?”
“Home,” Callie replied bitterly. “Why are you working as a traffic cop?”
Malachi’s smile was equally bitter. “There was a transfer within the department. I’m with the traffic police for a while.”
Callie wasn’t easily fooled. She frowned. “You’re with the criminal investigation team. A sudden transfer to traffic police doesn’t follow procedure.”
It was clearly a demotion.
“Malachi, did you make a mistake?” Callie boldly guessed.
Malachi looked frustrated but couldn’t say much. “Mrs. Oconnor, you’re overthinking it. It’s just a simple personnel transfer.”
Callie didn’t give up. “Fine, then tell me about my father’s case. You investigated the Ellison family. Any findings?”
Malachi couldn’t answer, looking even more frustrated. “It’s still under investigation.”
“Who’s investigating now? As an involved party, I have the right to know.”
“Mrs. Oconnor,” Malachi almost smiled wryly. “Please stop asking.”
“Is it because of this investigation that you were demoted? Tell me the truth.” Callie was agitated. After everything she’d been through, she felt she was finally getting close to some answers.
She persisted, causing a traffic jam behind her. Another cop approached. “Malachi, what’s going on?”
His gaze fell on Callie and turned impatient. “It’s her again.”
Malachi elbowed him. “I’ll handle it.”
The cop didn’t leave under Callie’s intense gaze and said excitedly, “What’s there to ask? It’s because of you and your father’s case that Malachi ended up in traffic police. Satisfied?”
