Jamir switched to another phone and continued calling, “Callie, being with those two won’t end well.”
Callie took a deep breath, “It’s none of your business.”
She hung up again, and he didn’t call back.
Regan pushed the door open and came in, “You’re awake. There’s a call for you.”
Callie tensed up, her hand trembling slightly, “Who is it?”
“It’s the hospital.”
Surprised, Callie answered and found it was Mikayla, “Miss Marsh.”
“You…”
“Mr. Scott is in the hospital.”
Callie’s hand shook more violently, “He should be in Anbusea. How did he get back?”
Mikayla was silent for a moment, “When he returned, he was covered in injuries.”
Thinking about the torture Owen inflicted on him in Anbusea, Callie’s emotions grew more complicated.
Finally, she spoke, “Is Jaquan awake? Can you let me talk to him?”
“Give it to me.” Jaquan’s voice came through after some noise. She finally heard him say, “Stay where you are and don’t come out. Don’t pay attention to the rumors.”
Callie’s feelings were mixed, her eyes flickering, “Jaquan, what happened that day?”
After a brief silence, Jaquan slowly replied, “I don’t know.”
Those words hurt Callie deeply.
Some things were hard to bear.
“Did we… have sex?”
This silence lasted longer. Jaquan’s tone was somewhat humble as he said, “Does it matter to you? Or do you care about Nelson’s opinion?”
“Jaquan.”
“It was drugs. Someone spiked my drink. I was almost unconscious the whole time. I don’t know if anything happened. Does that answer satisfy you?”
“Jaquan.”
The call ended abruptly.
Callie left Regan’s small room and returned the phone. Regan handed her a cup of hot water, “Callie, do you want to sleep a bit more?”
Callie shook her head. Regan continued, “The rumors outside are nasty.”
“I know.”
She had seen some earlier. The whole city was talking about it. There were rumors that Nelson had already met with a lawyer and was about to divorce her.
Others speculated that to prove their deep affection and for the sake of Oconnor Group’s stock market, Nelson and Callie would not divorce for now.
Rumors spread like wildfire.
Some even said the whole Oconnor family was alarmed by this incident.
Not long after, Jaquan contacted Callie again. His first words were an apology, “I shouldn’t have lost my temper with you. I’m sorry. If we really had sex, I will take responsibility.”
Callie didn’t respond. Suddenly she heard him say, “Nelson is in the hospital now.”
No one is made of iron. After prolonged sleeplessness and stress, Nelson finally fell ill.
When Callie arrived, Anthony was outside. Through the slightly open door, she saw Nelson lying on the bed, apparently asleep, with an IV in his hand.
Anthony looked distressed, his throat choked up, “Madam, tell me, who is that man?”
Callie withdrew her gaze as he continued, “Mr. Oconnor has mobilized all our people in Ylosea. Once they find that man, his fate will be dire.”
Callie leaned over the large bed, carefully observing Nelson’s sleeping face. His eyes were ringed with dark circles, making him look very fragile. She felt an inexplicable urge to touch his large hand but withdrew cautiously just before making contact.
