She didn’t know what she was thinking; she needed a pair of scissors to cut away the chaotic thoughts in her mind.
After an unknown amount of time, Callie finally couldn’t hold on any longer and fell asleep at the bedside. Her nerves were so tense that she could break down at any moment.
When Nelson woke up, he smelled a familiar scent. Turning his head, he saw the woman he had been longing for. He closed his eyes tightly, feeling a sharp pain in his brow.
Despite the pain, he eventually found his coat and gently draped it over her, suppressing a cough to avoid waking her. His face turned slightly red from the effort.
Callie only slept for a short while. When she woke up, she saw Anthony coming in to give Nelson an IV. She assumed it was Anthony who had covered her with the coat and whispered a bitter thank you.
Nelson seemed to still be asleep.
She got up and left the ward, instructing Anthony, “Please don’t tell him I was here.”
Anthony had never been in a relationship and didn’t understand their interaction. He looked at the empty ward door, clenched his fist, and coughed lightly, his eyes filled with pain.
He said, “She would be embarrassed.”
But Callie did not leave the hospital. She was determined to undergo an examination, one that abandoned her dignity and the little pride she had left.
Lucia quickly learned about Nelson’s hospitalization.
She came to the ward alone, her head held high, reminiscent of the arrogance she displayed when she temporarily took over as chairman of Oconnor Group.
She was undoubtedly angry.
“Get a divorce.” That was the first thing she said to Nelson.
Nelson had already gotten up and was leaning against the bed, looking at documents. He raised his eyes wearily. “The matter hasn’t been clarified yet.”
“How much more clarification do you need?” Lucia asked incredulously. “I saw at the press conference that you didn’t deny it was photoshopped. The photos are real, right? The truth is just as it’s being spread outside, isn’t it?”
She pushed away the water cup handed to her by a servant, her anger evident.
“Your marriage with her has had problems for a long time. As an observer for so long, I can see it clearly. What’s the outcome?”
“Tell me, how are you going to stabilize Oconnor Group’s stock market fluctuations now? How will you make up for the losses in various collaborations? Foreign investors and politicians have always been eyeing you covetously. How will you defend yourself this time?”
Nelson listened quietly as Lucia finished speaking. He took off his glasses indifferently and threw them aside. “Does it have anything to do with you? I can handle it.”
After a long silence, Lucia looked at Nelson’s unpleasant expression and spoke again. “If your father knew about this, he wouldn’t agree to you continuing this marriage either.”
Mentioning his father made Nelson shoot her a sharp glance. “You have no right to bring him up, and he wouldn’t be unreasonable!”
Lucia sneered. “This isn’t about being unreasonable. Let me ask you, if she really had an affair with someone else, wouldn’t you feel uncomfortable being with her in the future?”
She knew her son well. From childhood to adulthood, he always wanted the best and most unique things. Now that Callie had been involved with someone else…
Nelson’s Adam’s apple bobbed as waves of pain surged through his heart.
Anyone could take away his empire; if they could take it, they could have it. But no one could touch Callie. Anything related to her could make him abandon everything without a fight.
Seeing his silence, Lucia ruthlessly said, “Better to marry a reformed prostitute than a cheating wife! Think about it carefully.”
“Bang!”
A loud noise erupted as Nelson swept everything off the bedside table onto the floor. He was like a caged beast, enraged and violent, showing no mercy to anyone.
“Get out!”
