This statement made Callie look up in surprise. “You knew all along that Jaquan would go with me.”
Nelson’s emotions were unclear, but it was evident that he didn’t like her reaction.
“I knew.”
Callie took a step back. “You also know what business he’s doing in Anbusea.”
“Our people have been keeping an eye on Jaquan for years, and his involvement with Owen is clear.”
Callie couldn’t believe it. “Powerful people like to take risks. It’s half about winning and half about investing. Nelson, have you ever thought about what would happen if you lost the bet? What if I died?”
These words made the man’s face darken. “I’ve already told you, Jaquan won’t harm you.”
“That’s because you know he likes me!” Callie let out all the grievances she had accumulated over the past few days. Her eyes turned bloodshot. “You knew that even if Owen wanted to kill me, Jaquan would protect me with his life. You used Jaquan’s feelings!”
She couldn’t accept it. Her life was being gambled away by him.
She was bound to suffer some grievances with Owen, but Callie’s extreme reaction made Nelson raise an eyebrow. “Are you complaining on behalf of Jaquan, or are you bothered by his so-called feelings?”
Hit the nail on the head.
But as Callie looked at the man now, she understood that she should adapt to the situation. However, she couldn’t bring herself to give a negative answer. The experiences she had gone through with Jaquan during their time in Anbusea couldn’t be forgotten.
She didn’t know how to explain to Nelson that she owed someone a great favor!
“Nelson, in Anbusea, everyone says Owen is heartless, but I feel like you’re a thousand times more heartless than him.”
After saying this, Callie watched as even his gaze turned cold. She asked, “Is my father’s disappearance related to you?”
Before this moment, she had never doubted Nelson, but now a hint of suspicion arose.
Nelson’s figure suddenly swayed. “Callie, if you can be honest with Jaquan, shouldn’t you be honest with me too?”
His low voice still managed to touch her deep inside at this moment. Callie instinctively looked away and didn’t ask any further.
“I couldn’t find any news about Reuben in Anbusea. It seems like everything happened in Ylosea. I haven’t been staying at the Paucaster Villa during this time.”
After saying that, she packed a few changes of clothes and prepared to leave.
Nelson stood still, watching her hurried figure come and go without saying a word.
By the time Callie finished packing, he had returned to his calm demeanor. “I won’t withdraw our people from Anbusea. They will keep an eye on Jaquan for you, for your peace of mind.”
She didn’t stop walking.
“While you were away, I took care of the studio for you. Take some time to go and see it.”
Hearing this, Callie remembered that she still had a studio, but with so much going on, she really didn’t have the energy for it.
When she looked up, Nelson had already walked downstairs and disappeared around the corner.
Only the faint smell of tobacco lingered in the air.
He must have been smoking heavily recently.
When Callie reached the ground floor, everyone involved was gone except for Kieran, who remained in place.
“Callie, Mr. Oconnor asked me to wait for you.”
“Do you think I’m being unreasonable?”
Kieran frowned. “You survived a life-or-death situation. No one can blame you for anything, and I believe Mr. Oconnor doesn’t either.”
But he doesn’t care about my life or death, Callie thought. And during the time she was away, he had been in close contact with Charlotte. Even though she could understand it, her heart couldn’t help but ache.
“Never mind, just take me somewhere.”
