She took a deep breath and pretended to be calm. “Okay, as long as you’re fine.”
However, Jaquan saw through her thoughts at a glance, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. “Wait a couple of days, I’ll figure something out and get you out of here.”
Callie held his hand and reassured him, “No, I don’t want you to get into trouble again.”
But Jaquan only caressed her hand and remained silent.
Staying here, every move Callie made was under Owen’s surveillance. There was even a maid following her to the bathroom. After two days, she was getting fed up.
As she walked in the yard that day, she suddenly noticed that the nearby villas were connected. They must all belong to Owen’s territory, and she could hear children’s voices nearby.
She paid close attention for a while and confirmed her suspicion. That little girl from the other day should also live here.
Usually, around five in the afternoon, a bodyguard would take her to school and bring her back. Then the sound of piano practice would fill the air, and upon careful listening, it was the Moonlight Sonata that Callie had learned before.
Callie couldn’t help but smile. Such a young child learning such a difficult piano piece, she wondered if it was luck or hardship.
After finishing the piano practice, the girl would play in the yard under the company of a maid.
Callie tentatively asked Jaquan, “What’s the name of the little girl Owen adopted?”
Still in the recovery period, Jaquan half-lay on a cushion, revealing a gruesome wound on his back. “Hannah.”
“Why did Owen adopt a child?”
Jaquan pondered for a moment. “No one knows. I’ve seen that child a few times. She’s well-behaved and calls me brother.”
Callie was not in the right state of mind. She nodded and handed him a sliced apple.
“Callie.” He took it but didn’t eat, suddenly asking, “Don’t you think this is good? Living peacefully, just the two of us.”
With those words, Callie snapped back to reality. She looked wary and asked, “What do you mean?”
Jaquan took a bite of the apple, finding it sour, and didn’t say anything more.
Frowning, she turned to clean the knife. “I don’t think it’s good. It’s imprisonment.”
Human joys and sorrows are not shared. What he found happiness in, she found pain.
Jaquan didn’t argue.
“Jaquan, let me remind you that we both have marriages.”
Callie put the fruit knife back in its place with a decisive thud.
Jaquan felt like he was going crazy. He actually thought that she didn’t dislike him but couldn’t be with him because of their marriages.
After standing for a while, Callie opened the room door and suddenly saw a little head peeking out from behind a pillar. As soon as she stepped out, it quickly retreated like a startled butterfly.
Callie’s eyes lit up and she approached cautiously. “Hannah?”
The little girl instinctively backed away, watching her warily as if she didn’t recognize her.
Callie remembered that she had been wearing makeup that day, so it was normal for her not to be recognized. She crouched down. “Do you remember me? I’m the kind sister who took you to find your dad that day.”
Upon hearing this, Hannah suddenly realized. “Kind sister!”
Callie tilted her head playfully. “Why are you alone here?”
Hannah pouted. “I heard that Jaquan brother got hurt, so I wanted to come see him. They wouldn’t let me, so I sneaked out by myself.”
Callie looked around and indeed no one was following them. They also had cover from their surroundings.
“Don’t worry, he’s much better now.”
“Are you Jaquan’s girlfriend?” The little girl’s mind was active.
Callie was taken aback for a moment, then shook her head and glanced at the phone watch on her hand.
