Southbridge seemed to be Owen’s place of residence, equipped with the best surgeons from Anbusea. As soon as Jaquan arrived, he was immediately treated.
Throughout the night, Callie stayed by his side, wiping his sweat and giving him the medicine prescribed by the doctor.
Jaquan had moments of consciousness, albeit brief. His words were muddled, all pleading for Owen to spare Callie.
Every time he said that, Callie felt a chill down her spine, as if a dagger was pressed against her.
Once Jaquan passed the critical period, Callie was taken by a servant to take a bath. When she came out, Owen was sitting in the room, still holding the gun.
Callie squinted her eyes. “Owen, by keeping this gun, you’re inviting trouble. Are you sure you want to hold onto it?”
But the man only raised the gun and aimed it at her. “You have a husband, yet you still want to mess with Jaquan. You’re not a good woman.”
Callie didn’t want to argue with him. Facing the barrel of the gun, she confidently stepped forward. “Being able to make a hot-blooded man do things for me is my skill.”
The gun pressed against her throat, and she was certain Owen wouldn’t dare to shoot.
“Owen, can’t you even tolerate a woman? With your power and influence, after all these years, is there not a single woman who has captivated you?”
Callie’s eyes turned amber, looking calm when facing people. She was a courageous woman.
Owen stared at her through his mask. “Your tricks might work on Jaquan, but I’m not falling for them.”
The position with the gun pressed against her wasn’t comfortable, and Callie almost felt nauseous. “If you want to deal with me, at least wait until he wakes up.”
He tightened his grip on the trigger. “I don’t need his opinion to deal with a woman.”
Callie trembled slightly but forced herself to stay calm.
However, Owen didn’t shoot for a long time. And so she understood that she had made the right bet.
“If you kill me, Jaquan will no longer serve you. You actually need him,” she said.
Owen’s hand holding the gun trembled for a moment before he placed it on the table. “Remember, even if I let you live, I have ten thousand ways to make your life worse than death.”
With that, he left with his hands behind his back. It was at this moment that Callie noticed he had young hands, a skin tone that couldn’t be disguised.
Jaquan woke up in the evening, but Callie couldn’t see him as Owen blocked her from entering. She was anxious and clung to the door. After a while, Sullivan approached and opened the door. Callie stumbled in and rushed to Jaquan’s bedside. “Are you feeling better? Are you okay?”
Owen watched coldly from the side. “Remember what you promised me.”
Once Owen left, Callie grabbed Jaquan’s hand. “What did you promise him?”
His face turned pale, but he forced a smile. “You know what it is. If we don’t trade something, Owen won’t let me go.”
She held onto his hand tighter, filled with guilt. “I’m sorry, Jaquan. I’m so sorry.”
“Why cry? Weren’t you brave when he pointed the gun at you?” He even managed to make a joke.
Callie remembered that scene and trembled all over. “What do we do next?”
Jaquan’s gaze turned vacant. “At this point, Owen won’t allow you to leave. You might have to endure staying here for a while.”
Hearing that he was temporarily okay, Callie breathed a sigh of relief. But immediately after, a wave of disappointment washed over her.
After experiencing so much, she was starting to feel scared. She wanted to go back to Nelson’s side.
