“Alright, the case has been filed for investigation. Don’t worry too much for now. Think carefully about where he might have gone. We will also deploy police forces to search nearby.”
Malachi tried to reassure Callie.
But Callie couldn’t calm down. “Officer, my father couldn’t have just wandered off on his own.”
Malachi’s sharp investigative instincts kicked in. “Does he have any enemies?”
Enemies… Callie’s mind raced. If she had to name any enemies, none of them had a direct hostile relationship with Reuben.
Callie pressed her lips together. “I’ll think about it more. I’ll let you know if I remember anything.”
Malachi nodded. Before getting into the car, his colleague patted him on the shoulder and whispered, “Captain, we’re out here on a case. Why do you still look so worried? The higher-ups won’t leave you hanging for long.”
Malachi elbowed him lightly and then apologized to Callie. “Do you need us to take you home?”
Callie snapped back to reality. “No, thank you.”
She quickly walked to her car, stepped on the gas, and drove off.
A few officers watched the car speed away and quietly discussed, “Captain, are you taking over this case or…”
Malachi’s perpetually furrowed brow tightened even more. “I’ll handle it. The reporting party has a special identity.”
“What identity?”
The background check on Callie revealed: “She is Mrs. Nelson.”
The colleagues immediately understood why Malachi wanted to take the case personally.
Callie drove straight to Oconnor Group, speeding through rush hour traffic recklessly.
She walked against the flow of people leaving work, heading directly to the VIP elevator, swiped her card, and went straight to the top floor.
Up until this moment, she still hadn’t received a call back from Nelson.
“Ma’am?” The secretarial staff were startled to see Callie arrive in such a hurry. Seeing that she ignored them, they said, “Ma’am, Mr. Oconnor’s meeting isn’t over yet. He’s not in his office.”
Callie clenched her hands, her expression tense. She changed direction and headed straight for the conference room.
“You can’t go in there, ma’am! Mr. Oconnor is in a board meeting!”
Everyone present was a director of Oconnor Group, holding significant power and discussing crucial matters about the company’s future development.
But Callie ignored the obstruction and resolutely pushed open the glass door of the conference room, startling everyone inside who looked up simultaneously.
Nelson sat at the head of the table, documents spread out before him. He slowly turned his head, his expression stern and businesslike, devoid of his usual warmth.
He closed the document.
The assistant from the secretarial office quickly explained, “Ma’am insisted on coming in. I couldn’t stop her…”
Several directors had unspeakable opinions on their faces. “As Mr. Oconnor’s wife, it’s not proper to break the rules like this.”
Callie stood at the doorway of the conference room. She turned slightly and said loudly, “This meeting ends here today. I have urgent matters to discuss with Mr. Oconnor.”
Her voice was firm and fearless, but if one looked closely, they could see the fine sweat beading on her forehead.
The directors exchanged glances and finally looked at Nelson. He put down his document and commanded with an authoritative presence, “Didn’t you hear? This meeting ends here.”
With his words, everyone had no choice but to get up and leave the conference room, passing by Callie as they exited.
“Everyone’s gone now. What’s the matter?” Nelson asked softly, his tone carrying no blame but rather a hint of warmth.
Callie’s rigid body began to tremble slightly. Here, she no longer needed to pretend to be strong. She slowly said, “Reuben is missing.”
At these words, Nelson’s expression changed dramatically.
