Upon hearing this, Callie wanted to open her eyes but resisted.
The man glanced at her. “Your skills need improvement.”
Reuben, feeling affirmed, held her hand. “Listen, even Nelson says it’s lacking. You never listen to me.”
Callie turned over, unwilling to speak.
Nelson and Reuben exchanged a glance. The latter understood and stood up. “I need a drink of water. You’ve been exhausting me these past few days.”
Left alone, Callie remained silent. Nelson squinted at the distant sea. “Director Jenkins has been caught. Jaquan has an unlucky year. You don’t need to learn to brew his favorite tea.”
The sharpness of his words struck Callie. She opened her eyes. “I’m not learning it for him. Just like this cup of tea in front of you, it’s not yours.”
Nelson casually reached out but with great force, pulling her into his arms. “Besides me, who else do you want to belong to?”
Unable to break free, Callie gave up struggling. She lazily replied, “No one. Some things were never mine to begin with.”
His large hand encircled her waist as he buried his head in her chest, inhaling her scent. After a moment, he asked in a muffled voice, “How much do you know?”
Callie paused, understanding his meaning. “I don’t understand.”
“When did you find out Maevelyn returned to the Ellison family?”
He already knew but discovered it too late. Callie no longer wanted to speak kindly. She coldly said, “When you found out is when I found out.”
On New Year’s Eve.
Nelson suddenly understood the meaning behind her words that night. She had known for a long time.
“Yes, that day you met Jaquan, he told you.”
Callie took a step back, facing him directly. “If he hadn’t told me, you wouldn’t have either.”
Nelson didn’t avoid her gaze. “I would have.”
“At least during these days I’ve been waiting, you never mentioned it.”
If he hadn’t discovered her connection with Jaquan, he might never have said anything. Callie smiled mockingly. “Now that the news is spreading, you had no choice but to tell me, right? Nelson, our marriage is becoming meaningless.”
For a couple to reach the point of saying their relationship is meaningless is heartbreaking.
Nelson tightened his hold on her. Her distance made him anxious.
“In the first few days after she returned, I wasn’t sure if it was true. Once confirmed, I planned to tell you. Grandpa received the news first and wanted to see her.”
What he said matched his actions. After arranging her meeting with Grandpa, he learned about the construction site incident-a series of delays.
Callie didn’t want to argue; she was tired. “You had many opportunities to tell me but didn’t. Do you think your bond with her is too strong for me to understand as your wife? Is that why you didn’t dare say anything?”
She had to admit that seeing Maevelyn in person made her feel insecure.
Nelson frowned slightly. “Callie, I admit there was some delay, but not because I feared you’d misunderstand.”
