“I just got the news that the project undertaken by Scott Group has collapsed!”
Upon hearing this, Callie’s face turned pale instantly. “How is that possible?”
Both elders looked over simultaneously.
“Today is New Year’s Eve, so few people have received the news. The police and reporters don’t know yet, but it indeed collapsed. We don’t know if anyone was hurt!” Regan said quickly.
Callie felt a chill down her spine. “Impossible, how could it collapse? The substandard materials were all replaced! I was overseeing it!”
Regan’s ability to get this news indicated he had reliable sources. “Once dawn breaks, this won’t be kept under wraps.”
After hanging up the phone, Callie still hadn’t recovered from the shock. She couldn’t understand it, but the situation was urgent. She stood up and said, “Reuben, Grandpa, there’s an emergency at work. I need to go out. You should rest early!”
“On New Year’s Eve? Is it that urgent?” Grandpa was also anxious.
Callie didn’t have time to explain. She changed her shoes and grabbed a set of car keys. “Don’t worry, I’m just going to check.”
She hurriedly left, with the elderly man’s voice trailing behind her, “Be careful on the road.”
“Ah, young people nowadays are always busy with work,” Grandpa sat back down and exchanged a glance with Reuben. “It’s just the two of us keeping each other company.”
Reuben nodded repeatedly. “I hope they all stay safe…”
Callie randomly picked a car from the old mansion and drove straight to the construction site. Fortunately, it was New Year’s Eve, so there were hardly any cars on the road, making for a smooth drive.
But her hands were still sweating.
How could it have collapsed?
Hopefully, no one was hurt. But if there were casualties…
Callie didn’t dare to think about whether it would implicate the studio. Once dawn broke and everyone knew, it would undoubtedly be a huge impact.
Callie arrived and saw a few people standing sparsely on the construction site as soon as she got out of the car. They all wore safety helmets, with lighting equipment above their heads.
She could clearly see that the central area had collapsed extensively, beyond repair.
Her heart pounded as she quickly walked forward. “Is anyone down there?”
No one answered her. She turned around and grabbed a person wearing a safety helmet. “Speak up.”
The person was sweating profusely. “Who are you…”
“I’m the designer of this project. Speak up!” Callie shouted.
The person’s facial muscles trembled in fear as he wiped his sweat repeatedly. “It… it seems like there might be…”
Callie’s heart sank.
At that moment, a shout came from behind her. “Callie?! What are you doing here!”
She turned around abruptly and saw Jaquan storming over from the collapsed area, wearing a safety helmet and full of anger. He grabbed her arm, trying to pull her away.
“Why aren’t you at home? Do you know what this place is!”
Callie struggled desperately and suddenly raised her hand to slap him.
“Smack!”
Jaquan’s head turned from the blow.
“I oversaw the replacement of those materials. How could this happen?” she demanded loudly, trembling all over. “Did you do this?”
Jaquan’s face turned red from the slap, but his sharp expression revealed no emotion.
Callie stared at him closely. “The completion time was accelerated by three days. Is there something fishy about this?”
He didn’t respond.
“Did you secretly work at night?”
Jaquan grabbed her arm and tried to drag her out. “Let’s talk outside; it’s not safe here.”
Callie broke free and hit him desperately. “Jaquan! You bastard!”
