Callie heard this and exchanged a glance with Nelson. “I’ll go, Reuben. Just tell me what you need, and I’ll bring it back for you.”
Reuben glared. “Are you trying to imprison me, not letting me go anywhere?”
Callie nodded. “The Paucaster Villa is big enough for you to wander around, Reuben. You should be content.”
Reuben pointed at her and complained to Nelson, “Is this how she talks to me?”
Nelson smiled and handed Callie a glass of milk, signaling her to drink it. “I’ll have Kieran drive you. Make sure to stay safe.”
Even knowing there was danger, Callie felt it was a bit over the top. Shamar wouldn’t attack someone in broad daylight.
“Okay.”
After Nelson left, Reuben handed Callie a list. Besides some clothes, there were various documents.
Reuben gestured, “It’s a red mooncake box, placed on the top shelf of the wardrobe. Make sure to bring it back.”
Callie looked at the list. “What’s inside that’s so precious?”
Leaning on his cane, Reuben said discontentedly, “That’s your father’s privacy.”
“Got money in there?”
“Shush!”
Callie stopped teasing him.
When she arrived at the old place, nothing had changed, and there were no signs of anyone having been there. She opened the wardrobe and indeed saw a red box on the top shelf.
The first thing she wanted to do was open it and see what was inside. Reuben’s secrecy made her very curious.
“Kieran, do you think it would be okay if I took a look?” Callie held the box, seeking approval from Kieran.
Kieran smirked. “Go ahead.”
Callie shook her head. “Reuben would be angry.”
“Then don’t look.”
“Ugh.” Callie wasn’t satisfied with that answer. “But I really want to see.”
“Forget it, I’ll just take a quick peek!” Unable to resist, Callie rubbed her hands together and opened the metal box.
Inside were various medical records and documents belonging to Reuben. Callie picked them up and looked through them but found nothing unusual.
There was some money at the bottom, not much, at most three thousand dollars.
Underneath was a yellowed photo album that started from when Callie was in middle school because that was when their family got a camera. The album included not only her but also Joaquin’s mother.
Callie looked through it nostalgically before closing it.
She continued to dig deeper and found a medical license.
She paused and opened the first page, revealing a young photo of Reuben with the name Reuben Marsh written on it.
“Reuben was a doctor…” Callie had almost no memories of her early childhood. From as far back as she could remember, Reuben never had a stable job and always did odd jobs to support the family.
He had actually been a surgeon!
Callie frowned deeply. Reuben had never mentioned this to her. He was such an impressive person…
At the very bottom of the box was a large document. Just as she was about to continue looking through it, an urgent ringing interrupted her.
Kieran handed her the phone, showing Eliza’s name on the screen.
Callie snapped back to reality. She had told Eliza to call if there were any decisions she couldn’t make on her own.
“Hello.” Callie closed the box and answered the call.
“Callie, there’s an emergency. Jade and I discovered that they’re using substandard materials at the construction site.” Eliza lowered her voice. “We confronted them, but they ignored us and told us to mind our own business.”
Callie’s heart sank. “Are you sure?”
“We’re sure. The materials are definitely not up to standard.”
