Nelson held her close again, gently comforting her. “This floor-to-ceiling window is custom-made from London. You can see outside from inside, but not the other way around. I was just kidding, don’t worry.”
He felt the rapid drop in her body temperature and was filled with regret.
Callie’s hand fell limply. “You almost did it!”
Almost treated her like a toy, someone to be trampled on at will!
Nelson carefully tidied her hair, his tone slightly sinister. “If you behave, I won’t let you suffer humiliation.”
After a long while, Callie looked up. “Let’s leave the past behind us and not mention it again, okay?”
“Okay.” Nelson nodded and carried her into a private lounge, speaking softly. “Get some rest.”
Callie kept her eyes closed.
Nelson gave her space and turned to leave, his eyes dark and brooding. He sat at his desk and slammed the lighter onto it.
After a long time, he made a phone call. “Investigate the Quinn Group for me.”
Anthony was just outside the door, the soundproofing excellent. He didn’t understand why Nelson didn’t summon him but made a call instead.
“Understood.”
Nelson rubbed his temples, thinking of the scarf Callie had knitted now around Jamir’s neck, unable to quell his anger.
He kicked a chair, producing a harsh noise.
Callie moved her sore body, picking up her phone from the floor where it had fallen during her confrontation with Nelson. The screen was shattered.
Fortunately, it still turned on.
Wrapped in a blanket, she sat on the floor and typed out a message: Regan, can you arrange a meeting with Dr. Quinn for me?
She looked up at the city’s endless and eerie nightscape.
Callie slept in the lounge all night. When she came out, Nelson was no longer in the office. The secretarial staff had prepared clean clothes and a delicate breakfast. “Ma’am, Mr. Oconnor instructed us to prepare this for you. Please remember to have breakfast after changing.”
Callie glanced down. “Got it.”
The clothes fit perfectly, accentuating her figure. She let her hair down to cover some of the kiss marks.
The secretary marveled silently at how beautiful Mrs. Oconnor was-stunning without being aggressive, with an inherent allure.
Many outside voices said Callie wasn’t a match for Nelson, but when they stood together, they were indeed well-matched!
Callie left Oconnor Group unimpeded. Not far away, she passed a black Porsche that suddenly honked, startling her.
The window rolled down slowly to reveal Jamir.
Today he wore gold-rimmed glasses, one hand on the steering wheel, reminiscent of his younger self. “Callie.”
Callie stood still, meeting his gaze.
After a few seconds, her eyes filled with exhaustion, devoid of any joy from their reunion.
“Have you been waiting here for me?”
Callie got into the passenger seat and saw a breakfast beside her, seemingly prepared especially for her.
“I’ve been waiting for you all night,” Jamir said calmly.
His tone was flat, masking the loneliness of looking up at tall buildings all night.
Callie hadn’t left Oconnor Group all night; he could pretty much guess what had happened. The red marks on her wrist covered by prayer beads confirmed his thoughts.
Callie paused slightly but didn’t look at him.
