“Alright, Grandma.” Agnes smiled. She was a particularly kind girl who often considered others’ feelings. Just a few kind words would make it hard for her to refuse.
Seeing her agree, Tom put away his phone and spoke into the receiver, “Grandma, I’m hanging up now. We’ll be there soon.”
“Why didn’t you have the driver pick you up?”
“No need, it’s easy to catch a cab. Bye-bye.”
“Alright, hurry back. Grandma is waiting for you at home!” The elderly woman’s joy was evident in her voice, and it warmed the hearts of the two young people.
Agnes held onto her suitcase, feeling a bit embarrassed as she lowered her gaze. She had been refusing earlier; was she playing hard to get?
What would he think of her?
Jeffery hailed a cab and kindly said to the girl, “Agnes, let me take your suitcase.”
The girl snapped out of her thoughts as Jeffery’s hand reached out and quickly grasped the handle. She let go immediately, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Tom, you and Agnes get in first.” Jeffery loaded the luggage while speaking to the two young people.
Tom opened the car door like a gentleman, his gentle gaze resting on the girl.
Agnes glanced at him as she passed by and bent down to get into the car.
Jeffery sat in the front passenger seat while Tom sat beside Agnes in the back. The car headed towards Fritz Manor.
Agnes felt a bit awkward; she pressed her lips together, sensitive by nature, unsure of what Tom thought of her now. After all, she had politely declined both Tom and Jeffery’s invitations to the manor earlier.
But one call from Grandma changed her mind.
Tom noticed Agnes’s discomfort and reached out to hold her hand tightly, providing a sense of security.
The girl turned to look at him and softly explained, “I don’t know why, but whenever it’s Grandma, I just don’t want to disappoint her.”
Jeffery felt comforted hearing this.
He turned his head, his smile even softer and more affectionate as he looked at the girl with deep emotion. “You’re wonderful.”
The girl returned his affectionate gaze with a bright and sweet smile.
Because she loved him, she loved everything about him.
Tom hadn’t even arrived home yet but could already imagine how happy Grandma would be to see Agnes.
About ten minutes later.
The taxi drove straight into Fritz Manor and stopped in front of the large villa.
As soon as the car door opened, Grandma, with her silver hair gleaming, greeted them with a big smile. “Agnes is here! Come on!” The elderly woman eagerly opened the car door.
“Grandma.” Before getting out of the car, Agnes saw the kind old woman’s smiling face and quickly greeted her.
Grandma extended her hand towards Agnes from outside the car door. Agnes placed her small hand in Grandma’s palm and carefully stepped out of the car.
“Agnes, Grandma finally gets to see you again!” The elderly woman only had eyes for her as she led the girl towards the villa. “Have you lost weight recently? How’s your appetite? How are you sleeping?” She completely ignored her beloved grandson who hadn’t even gotten out of the car yet.
What stung was that Grandma didn’t even glance at him.
After getting out of the car, Tom watched as Grandma led Agnes towards the living room, chatting happily. For the first time, he felt left out and insignificant.
Jeffery helped the driver take out the luggage from the trunk while some servants came over to assist. He couldn’t help but tease Tom, “Looks like you’ve really fallen out of favor this time!”
