Agnes came back to her senses. She slowly lifted her tear-streaked face from his chest, her expression deeply moving him. His brows furrowed, and his throat tightened. The girl didn’t know what to say to him… Indeed, any words seemed pale and powerless at this moment. He knew she loved him deeply.
Taking the handkerchief Jeffery handed over, Tom carefully wiped away Agnes’s tears. As he looked at her, the girl couldn’t hold back her tears again, and they flowed uncontrollably.
“Don’t cry, I’m here now, aren’t I?” Tom’s deep black eyes held a complex emotion as he comforted her like a father.
The girl tried hard to control her emotions.
After wiping away her tears, he took her hand and led her towards the car not far away. Jeffery quickly stepped forward to open the back door, feeling relieved that there was no longer a need to guard against Lisa, and they were finally reunited.
Agnes got into the car, and Tom followed suit. Soon, Jeffery returned to the driver’s seat and drove off.
Agnes calmed down and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. Feeling a bit embarrassed, she turned to look out the window. For some reason, she didn’t have the courage to look at the man beside her whom she had missed day and night.
Tom glanced at her and then looked at her hands. He reached out again and gently held her hand. Agnes turned slowly and met his gaze.
“Your hands are so cold.” Then he said to Tom, “Turn on the air conditioning, Jeffery.”
After speaking, he let go of her hand and took off his jacket to drape it over her shoulders.
The girl stared at him in a daze, not knowing what to say for a moment. She felt an urge to cry again; this was the Mr. Kitten she loved so deeply.
After covering her with his jacket, Tom picked up his phone and dialed a number. “Prepare some food; we’ll be back soon.”
“Okay.”
Hanging up the phone, Tom thought for a moment and said to the girl beside him, “The exploded lab wasn’t ours; it was just nearby in the same area. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.”
He was alive, which she felt was the greatest happiness of her life.
“My phone ran out of battery, and I didn’t bring a charger. I left in a hurry.” Agnes bit her lip. “I couldn’t reach you…” She still felt a bit embarrassed after calming down.
To be honest, she was still somewhat frightened.
Experiments are full of dangers; you never know when something might go wrong.
She wanted so much to persuade him to come home… but she felt insignificant and couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Tom felt guilty but was at a loss for words. He knew she worried about him greatly; coming here alone in an unfamiliar place took immense courage.
Soon, the car stopped in front of an apartment building. After getting out of the car, Jeffery opened the door for her. “Miss Campbell, please.”
“Thank you.” Agnes smiled but couldn’t hide her sadness.
“Tom, I’ll come to pick you up early tomorrow morning,” Jeffery implied that he wouldn’t go up with them since these young people had finally met after such a long time.
“Alright.” Tom nodded.
Then he looked at Agnes. “Let’s go; I live here.” He began walking towards the entrance of the building.
The girl followed behind him closely. She carefully observed the surroundings and memorized every detail because it was related to him.
“The place is small but close to the research institute. I’m not here most of the time anyway, so I didn’t pay much attention to it.”
The hallway was somewhat dark, and the elevator was old. He said to her, “I live on the 17th floor.”
“Is it rented or bought?” She wanted to chat with him for a while longer.
“It’s a friend’s place; I didn’t spend any money on it. I can stay as long as I want.” Tom remained calm and composed. He had an air of nobility about him that couldn’t be diminished by his modest surroundings.
