In the elevator, she wore his suit jacket, standing beside him. Ding, the elevator stopped, and the doors opened. “We’re here,” Tom said softly, glancing at her. Agnes stepped out, and Tom followed. He entered a fingerprint code, opened the door, and looked at her again. “Go in,” he said.
Agnes looked at him before stepping inside. She had entered his domain once more. At that moment, Mrs. Brown came out of the kitchen with two bowls of beef noodles. Seeing Tom bringing a girl home surprised her; she had thought ‘we’ referred to him and Jeffery.
“Tom, you’re back?”
“Mrs. Brown,” Tom introduced, “This is my fiancee, Agnes.”
Agnes was taken aback by this introduction! She turned to look at him sharply because even Jane knew their engagement was fake. Why did he introduce her this way? Was he afraid his grandmother would find out?
However, the young girl didn’t mind and politely greeted the middle-aged woman, “Hello, Mrs. Brown.”
“Hello, Miss Campbell,” Mrs. Brown replied kindly, her eyes smiling as she looked at Agnes. “The noodles are freshly cooked; see if they suit your taste. Come and try them.”
Tom pulled out a chair for her. She took off his jacket.
“Give it to me,” Mrs. Brown said as she took the jacket and quickly hung it up before returning to the kitchen.
Agnes washed her hands and came back out.
“Sit,” he told her.
Agnes watched him sit down before taking a seat opposite him and picking up her chopsticks. She hadn’t eaten anything since getting off the plane and hadn’t been in the mood to eat on the flight either.
She had been hungry for a day and a night; it was already evening, almost dark outside. Despite various emotions swirling inside her, she didn’t feel hungry.
Outside, it began to rain lightly.
Both Tom and Agnes felt oppressed due to the lab explosion.
Although their loved ones were unharmed, many had sacrificed their lives for scientific research, which was a sorrowful event for everyone.
After finishing the beef noodles, Tom asked her, “Do you want anything else to eat?”
She really didn’t have much of an appetite; she was an empathetic girl still immersed in sadness and grief. So she shook her head.
“Then give me your phone,” he said as he stood up and reached out his hand. “I’ll charge it for you.”
Agnes handed him her phone that had automatically shut down. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he said with a slight smile before heading to the study.
Agnes put down her chopsticks and took the wet towel Mrs. Brown handed her to wipe her lips. “Thank you.”
“No need to be so polite, Miss Campbell. If you need anything in the future, just let me know.”
“Okay, thank you for your hard work.”
Mrs. Brown was someone Tom’s friend had hired to take care of him; she was kind and amiable.
After charging her phone in the study, Tom came out while Agnes stood up and met his gaze as she turned around.
When their eyes met, she felt complicated emotions-perhaps even a bit lost.
This was their first meeting after he read the email revealing her identity.
“After such a long flight, rest for a while and take a shower later. I’ll have Mrs. Brown buy some clothes for you,” Tom said calmly.
Agnes didn’t refuse; she pressed her lips together with countless things to say but didn’t know where to start.
The apartment was small with only two bedrooms-one for Mrs. Brown and one for him-even Jeffery didn’t stay there.
So tonight… Agnes felt a headache coming on.
