In her moment of helplessness and sorrow, she inadvertently turned her gaze and saw a familiar figure through her blurred vision. Agnes was stunned, unable to tell if it was a dream or an illusion. There stood Tom in a black trench coat, tall and solemn, outside the police line. Jeffery was by his side, both looking at the charred experimental building with complex emotions.
Agnes wiped her tears to clear her vision. It was him… it was Tom. She stared at him from about five meters away. Tom hadn’t noticed her; he was fixated on the disfigured building, the echoes of the explosions still ringing in his ears. His feelings went beyond mere sadness.
Agnes wasn’t sure if this was a dream. She looked at him, her face still pale, fearing he might vanish if she blinked. She watched him, barely daring to breathe, ignoring all other sounds around her, focused solely on him.
After a while, Jeffery glanced around and saw Agnes. He was visibly surprised and nudged Tom, saying, “Tom, Miss Campbell is here.” Tom looked at Jeffery, who pointed towards Agnes. Following Jeffery’s direction, Tom saw the tear-streaked girl looking dazed.
Tom’s thick brows furrowed slightly in shock. The sight of her moved him; he hadn’t expected to see her here. When Agnes met Tom’s gaze, she could no longer hold back and ran towards him. Like a slow-motion scene in a movie, she fought back her emotions and tears as she threw herself into his arms and hugged him tightly.
Tom was both shocked and moved. He slowly raised his hands and gently embraced the girl. Outside the charred building, amidst the wails of countless families, even the dark clouds seemed to hang low. The young couple hugged each other as if time had stopped.
Jeffery stood by, watching with teary eyes, deeply moved. Miss Campbell must have seen the news about the lab explosion and rushed over out of concern for Tom. Tom’s phone had been unreachable due to signal interference in the area.
Agnes clung to him, crying uncontrollably without any regard for how disheveled she appeared or whether her tears would stain his expensive clothes. Holding him gave her a sense of regaining something lost.
Tom held her back gently, trying to find the right words in his mind before finally saying, “I’m sorry for making you worry.” Agnes held him tightly but found herself at a loss for words.
Jeffery watched from the side, feeling touched. He realized that true love often leaves one speechless upon reunion; what could she say that wouldn’t seem inadequate? Her presence and tears spoke volumes about Tom’s place in her heart.
At that moment, they needed no words of affection because they were already in each other’s hearts. Tom had been in Agnes’s dreams every night; she just wanted to hold him and never let go again.
After ten minutes, as the wind picked up and dark clouds loomed lower, Tom gently held her shoulders and softly said, “Bubu, let’s go back to the apartment; it’s going to rain.”
