“Summer…” Mr. Brightwood began, his voice hoarse as if he hadn’t spoken in a long time. They looked exhausted, their eyes vacant and their thoughts sluggish, and they had lost a lot of weight, as if they hadn’t eaten enough. Their appearance deeply moved the kind-hearted Summer.
“Uncle, Aunt…” For a moment, she didn’t know how to comfort them because she knew the reason; she had almost become the daughter-in-law of this family.
“Summer, we haven’t eaten for three days…” Mr. Brightwood said sadly to her. “The house is full of debt collectors; the door has been smashed, and everything that could be moved has been taken away. It’s no longer livable…”
Summer furrowed her brows slightly, shocked by what she heard. Mrs. Campbell leaned weakly on her husband’s shoulder, tears in her eyes, feeling particularly sad but saying nothing.
Only Mr. Campbell looked at them like a lifeline and said, “Summer, Mr. Lawrence… We tried begging, but there are too many scammers now, and people are unwilling to show compassion anymore. Besides… we have hands and feet… sigh.”
He continued, “We also tried to find work, but in our current state of mind, no one would hire us.”
“Summer, my wife is sick… She has had a high fever for many days…”
Hearing this, Summer’s heart couldn’t bear it. She turned to look at the man beside her.
Spencer knew that with his wife’s kindness, if he didn’t help them, it would affect her mood and weigh on her conscience. So even though Summer didn’t ask, Spencer still chose to take them to the hospital.
He drove his own car and didn’t mind their dirty clothes. Before getting in the car, Summer went to a nearby cake shop and bought them milk and cakes.
They ate in the car…
At the hospital, Spencer registered them, contacted a doctor, paid the fees, and arranged for someone to accompany them for check-ups. After everything was arranged, he took Summer away.
After all, the hospital was crowded, and she was pregnant; it wasn’t suitable for her to stay long.
On the way home, Summer sat in the passenger seat. She turned to look at the man driving and had a thousand words in her heart but didn’t know how to start.
Spencer understood her thoughts and reached out to hold her hand. “Even if it were someone else today, we should help them. Doing good deeds is also accumulating virtue, so don’t feel burdened.”
Summer sighed lightly and leaned back in her seat, looking ahead. “From the moment we receive our life’s script, it seems the ending is predestined.”
“Do you believe in fate?” Spencer asked as he glanced at her.
Summer thought for a moment before answering. “I didn’t before; now I do.”
He said, “I believe too.”
Rupert’s parents felt immense guilt towards Summer and Spencer but also immense gratitude; they were more reliable than raising a son.
They believed in fate too…
Another week passed quickly…
In Marsh Group’s comic department director’s office, Agnes finished her work and once again picked up her phone to open the messaging app and check her chat with Kitten.
The chat history was still there from before; it had been twelve days without contact…
Was he still busy?
What about him taking the initiative?
Was he so busy that he didn’t even have time to send a message?
A girl’s thoughts are always sensitive and delicate. The happiness and joy she had accumulated before were gradually dissipating over time… Now her heart was filled with endless longing and disappointment.
She didn’t even know what kind of relationship she had with him; this feeling of being suspended was really hard for her to endure.
So, overwhelmed by emotion, she could no longer restrain herself and took the initiative to send him a message-
Kitten, what are you doing?
