“Slap!”
Sienna raised her hand and slapped hard.
“Madam!” The servant was shocked.
Marilyn fell to the ground, covering her face in disbelief. She looked at the trembling woman and continued, “Did I say something wrong? Ever since that person left, it’s like you’ve lost your soul. You don’t care about me or my brother anymore. You only focus on chanting and praying. Do you think praying will bring her back? It’s been so many years, and there’s not a single trace of her!”
Sienna trembled even more upon hearing these heart-piercing words.
“You’ve abandoned the whole family as if you never gave birth to me. If Maevelyn comes back now, will you kick me out and let her inherit the Ellison family?”
Marilyn shouted, her face covered in tears. This was her deepest fear, and saying it out loud made her feel somewhat relieved.
“Marilyn, what are you talking about? How could that be possible?” Sienna bent over, clutching her chest. “I raised you and your brother by myself. Haven’t you felt my love for you?”
“As for Maevelyn, she is your sister. You are related by blood. How can you be so indifferent?”
Marilyn raised an eyebrow and smiled, “I don’t think so. I’ve barely met her. I’ve never considered her my sister; she’s just a vague figure to me. I don’t understand why you can’t move on because of her.”
Every word stabbed at Sienna’s heart.
She was too angry to speak, standing still to calm herself.
Marilyn clung to her leg, half-kneeling on the ground, looking up at Sienna with fear and anxiety. “Mother, if Maevelyn comes back, will you really abandon me?”
Sienna lowered her eyes slightly, very coldly.
Marilyn became more anxious, “Is it true? I’m really scared, Mother. I have nightmares every day where you only love my sister and don’t see me at all. Will my dreams come true?”
Perhaps because she was genuinely terrified, Sienna’s mood softened a bit. She reached out and touched Marilyn’s head. “You’re both my daughters. How could that be? You’re overthinking it.”
Marilyn hugged her tightly, recalling the information the detective had found for her recently.
“Reuben Marsh was a former surgeon. Callie was adopted by him from the hospital, which his wife always resented. Later, he made a medical mistake and was dismissed from the hospital. The family moved to Ylosea to make a living,” the detective presented the documents.
“Callie is not his biological daughter.”
“All the surveillance cameras were broken back then. The missing Maevelyn left the Ellison family with no leads. After so many years, it’s even harder to find any clues. If Miss Ellison hadn’t provided a lead that pointed to Reuben, matching the time and place, we wouldn’t have concluded that Callie is Maevelyn.”
With everything settled, Marilyn closed her eyes. “If Nelson and the Ellison family investigate Callie, can they find this out?”
“Almost impossible because even Reuben doesn’t know that Callie is the Ellison family’s long-lost child.”
“This matter must be kept airtight, or I’ll have your life!”
“Yes… Miss Ellison, about the money…”
“Check it in two hours.”
Marilyn opened her eyes and returned to reality. “I’m sorry, Mother. I lost my head just now and misspoke. Please don’t be angry.”
Sienna’s remaining anger was soothed by her compliance. She sighed, “These years have been hard on you too. I’m sorry.”
Marilyn shook her head. “No, I’ve been fine. I’ll continue to live well according to the plan. I will marry Jaquan.”
