Sirena feigned concern and sighed, trying to persuade Audrey. “After all, it’s Ulric’s child. You can’t hurt Ulric’s feelings just to stand up for me! I don’t want to cause any discord between you and your son because of me.”
“You consider him so much, but look at him! First, he got involved with Rosalind, and now he’s marrying someone else without even telling me who it is! And now, a child has shown up claiming to be his!” Audrey became angrier as she spoke, and the accompanying doctor hurriedly advised her to stay calm.
“Your health is the most important! I don’t feel wronged. As long as I can stay by Ulric’s side, that’s enough for me, even if… even if I never have a title.”
“No, this is what I owe you! I must give it to you! As for this child, you don’t need to worry. If Ulric blames you in the future, just put all the blame on me and say I forced you to do it!”
This was exactly what Sirena wanted to hear. She was genuinely afraid that something might happen to Audrey.
Currently, the Walters family still had Ulric’s parents around, which meant she had a place there. If they were gone, the situation would be uncertain.
With Audrey’s support, Sirena could act as if nothing had happened.
Even if Ulric found out, she could say his mother ordered it. Since his mother admitted it herself, he couldn’t blame anyone else.
However, she still needed to show her concern.
“I’m really afraid he’ll be angry with you. Maybe I should tell him the truth.”
“Don’t! He was already angry with me when I stopped him from being with Rosalind. He doesn’t care about these things! No matter what, I’m still his mother. What can he do to me? But if you tell the truth, won’t that give him an excuse?”
Audrey still believed that her son was just too young and hadn’t settled down yet. She thought he didn’t realize Sirena’s worth yet but would understand in time.
“I’ll back you up and make sure those little bitches stay away! They dream of becoming my daughter-in-law-dream on.”
“Then… thank you!”
…
That night, Ulric was unusually drunk and unconscious.
If Cedric hadn’t arrived in time, he and Johnny would have had to sleep at the bar.
But… that wouldn’t have been a problem since they had reserved the place.
When Cedric arrived, he first called Johnny’s assistant to take him home while he helped his own boss into the car.
Drunk Ulric was exceptionally quiet. He didn’t speak; he just sat in the back seat of the car, staring out the window.
Sometimes he closed his eyes; sometimes he opened them.
Cedric kept an eye on him through the rearview mirror, ready to take him to the hospital if needed.
Since Ulric remained silent, Cedric knew his boss was troubled. Any attempt at consolation would be futile, so he chose to let him think things through on his own.
Sometimes too much advice falls on deaf ears.
He had tried persuading himself before but ended up chasing after Rosalind at the slightest hint of her presence.
The car didn’t stop until they reached Easthaven Bay.
Cedric got out and opened the back door. Ulric managed to get out and followed him inside.
Standing at the door of his home, Cedric heard his boss sigh softly-a barely audible sound.
“I miss her.”
