The police eventually decided to take him back for questioning, along with Callie. “Come with us to make a statement, don’t worry, it will be quick.”
They seemed to always be particularly patient and gentle with victims.
Nelson raised an eyebrow mockingly. “Officer, your attitude sure changes depending on who you’re dealing with.”
The officer glared at him. “And you have the nerve to act up? People like you don’t deserve any kindness!”
Nelson had never been insulted like this before.
Callie closed her eyes, beginning to regret involving Nelson. It felt like she was digging her own grave.
Nelson, who had been furious earlier, was now calm. They exchanged a glance, both knowing that no one would dare do anything to him.
In the end, it was uncertain who would be the unlucky one.
The baton had struck Nelson’s back hard, making it difficult for him to stand up straight.
In the cramped backseat of a car, occasionally jostling, Callie and Nelson bumped into each other. She didn’t dare look up or acknowledge him.
He whispered, “Just wait.”
Those two words made Callie uneasy. Nelson was not someone who would let things go easily.
She finally looked up. “Let it go, Nelson. Don’t retaliate against them, okay?”
Nelson sneered. “Why didn’t you feel sorry for them when you were shouting earlier?”
These people wanted him to face justice, not realizing they would be the ones to suffer in the end.
There was no way to communicate. Callie didn’t want to talk anymore.
“Are you a human trafficker, abducting women?” At the police station, the officer in charge was very irritable.
Nelson chuckled lightly. “How could it be abduction? This is my wife. We had a little argument, and these people insisted on interfering. Ask her.”
Everyone’s attention shifted back to the flustered Callie. “Is he your husband? Don’t be afraid, tell the truth. We’re here, you don’t need to worry about him retaliating later.”
Callie’s scalp tingled. She didn’t dare look at Nelson.
She opened her mouth hesitantly, but before she could speak, Nelson pulled out a marriage certificate from somewhere and tossed it on the table impatiently. “See for yourself.”
Callie was stunned. He actually carried their marriage certificate with him?
The certificate showed a photo of them facing the camera, looking like a perfect couple. The officer looked at the photo and then at them, confirming it. He snapped at Callie, “Then why did you call for help?”
Callie frowned tightly, feeling extremely guilty. She quickly began to apologize. “I’m sorry for causing trouble…”
After all this commotion, the two traffic officers were embarrassed and very resentful. “Miss, does he abuse you? From what I saw earlier, it didn’t look like you were faking it.”
It was clear she was genuinely afraid of Nelson.
“Domestic abuse?” Nelson smirked. “Do I really look like someone who abuses his wife?”
“Quite a bit.”
Nelson crossed his arms, growing more agitated. Callie, fearing he would get angrier, meekly apologized again.
He watched, his irritation growing. “Unbelievable.”
Anthony arrived quickly. He knew the protocol; they couldn’t let anyone know this was the executor of Oconnor Group. He did whatever was necessary to make amends. But once they left the police station, the approach would be different.
“Are you Nelson Oconnor from Oconnor Group?” The officers were shocked.
“Do you need to see my ID?”
Realizing they had arrested the wrong person, the police station admitted their mistake and insisted on taking him to check his injuries after apologizing profusely.
