The director didn’t dare say anything else and quickly called his subordinates to fetch the records.
At this point, privacy was no longer a concern. Angering this man could jeopardize the hospital’s very existence.
Ulric sat in the chair, silent, and the atmosphere around him felt frozen. No one dared to breathe loudly.
The silence was broken by the ringing of a phone.
It was a call from Audrey.
Ulric had already declined her call once, but she called again.
The second time, he answered.
“Mom.”
“You still remember I’m your mother? Why did you hang up on me?” Audrey’s voice was full of questions. “Are you trying to abandon your own mother now?”
Ulric furrowed his thick eyebrows, already guessing what this was about.
The only person who would involve his mother at this moment was Sirena.
“Is there something you need? I’m busy right now.”
“Busy with what? Busy looking for an illegitimate child who may not even be yours?”
“Yes.” Ulric saw no need to hide anything and admitted directly. “Since he looks like me, he could be my child. I have to find out.”
Audrey was so angry she wished she could fly back home immediately.
“The Walters family does not acknowledge any illegitimate children! Don’t give me those excuses. Are you trying to kill me with anger?”
“This is not up for discussion. If he’s mine, I’ll take responsibility.”
“Who is the child’s mother? Besides Rosalind, who else have you been with?”
Ulric pressed his thin lips together and didn’t answer.
Audrey, being the intelligent woman who raised such an outstanding son, quickly figured it out. “Only Rosalind? So this child is also Rosalind’s?”
“No, I haven’t confirmed that yet,” Ulric suddenly denied.
He feared his mother might act faster than him and harm Rosalind before he could intervene, making things worse.
Moreover, having one more person wanting to harm Rosalind was never good.
“You don’t know who you slept with?”
“Right, I’m not sure yet. I need to investigate.”
“You’ve wronged Sirena! You’ve been married twice already and now there’s a child involved. How am I supposed to face Sirena? She’s been waiting for you!” Audrey’s tone was full of support for Sirena as if she were her own daughter. “You were foolish before and married that Rosalind. She abandoned you, didn’t she? I asked Sirena to get close to you, but she said she was afraid you’d dislike her and wanted to give you space. Then you suddenly announced another marriage!”
After saying this, Audrey started coughing violently.
Knowing his mother’s health wasn’t good, Ulric couldn’t argue. He could only try to keep Rosalind out of it as much as possible.
“Mom, please see a doctor. I can handle things here.”
“I trusted you! Your way of handling things is by wronging Sirena! I haven’t even come to terms with your sudden marriage announcement, and now there’s an illegitimate child! How do you expect me to ask Sirena to marry you?”
“… Mom, I never planned to marry her. I don’t understand why you’re so insistent on us being together!”
Ulric thought that simple affection wouldn’t force a mother to pressure her own son like this.
But Audrey paused for a moment without revealing anything specific.
“I just like her!”
