Johnny sneered. “You think I dare to destroy you now? I feel like you’ve become so ruthless that I don’t even recognize you! The Sirena I remember was gentle, sensible, gracious, and poised. She would go through fire and water for W Group, defending the company’s interests in court! Look at you now, you’re completely unrecognizable.”
“Isn’t it all because of Rosalind? If she hadn’t taken Ulric away, I-”
“If she hadn’t, would Ulric have fallen in love with you? Don’t be ridiculous! I don’t have time to argue with you. Since you’re not admitting anything, I’ll go find Ulric.”
As he was about to hang up, Sirena suddenly said, “You can’t go! Johnny, if you do this, I’ll never forgive you!”
Johnny frowned, feeling he was getting closer to the truth. “What are you so afraid of?”
“If you go to Ulric with this, he’ll only think worse of me! You can investigate me; I don’t mind. But don’t let Ulric investigate.” She knew that if Ulric got involved, things would get complicated.
She had planned to handle the child quietly and without a trace. The last thing she expected was Johnny’s persistence!
He seemed more concerned than Ulric.
“Sirena, do you really need to see the coffin before shedding tears? I’ve already told you, if you hand it over now, I won’t let Ulric know about this. I promise! Just spare that child; consider it a favor to me! But if you don’t give me this favor, don’t blame me for what happens next.”
As their argument intensified, Sirena suddenly softened her stance and started crying on the other end of the line.
“How do you want me to prove my innocence? That child’s disappearance has nothing to do with me… Do you want me to die? Will you believe me if I’m dead?”
“…”
“Fine! I’ll die. Anyway, none of you can stand me; everyone thinks I’m a burden and shouldn’t be alive. Any dirty water or mess is blamed on me. So I’ll just die, then you won’t have to insult me anymore!”
Her words made Johnny start to doubt himself.
Could it be… he had wronged her?
“Swear that you didn’t do anything to that child.”
“I swear! If I did anything, may I die a horrible death!” Sirena swore without hesitation.
After all, she never believed in these things.
They say gods can bless people and bring retribution too. But as a child, she had knelt and prayed countless times for an end to her days of hiding and running. Did the gods ever hear her?
No! They never protected her! The external insults and contemptuous looks never ceased.
Since blessings were never given, retribution surely wouldn’t come either.
“Alright, I’ll believe you for now.”
Johnny sighed and silently hung up the phone.
Maybe he really had been too hasty, which led him to clutch at straws.
Although he couldn’t stand Sirena’s current behavior, he didn’t want to wrong her either! After all… she was the only person he had ever truly loved in his life.
The Sirena of the past was truly dazzling.
…
At the hospital, seeing Ulric arrive, the director personally came out to greet him.
He dared not show any negligence.
“Mr. Walters! Hello, hello. I didn’t know you’d be coming today; my apologies for not welcoming you sooner!”
Ulric glanced at him briefly, not in the mood for pleasantries. “I need you to immediately pull up all of Rosalind’s medical records for me. Not a single page missing.”
