Darnell was taken aback at first, then a playful smile appeared on his face. Lillian, feeling embarrassed and angry, asked, “What are you laughing at?”
“Nothing,” Darnell replied.
Darnell approached with a smile and blocked the car door that Lillian was about to close. He then sat down next to her and said, “You look beautiful today. Seeing such a beauty makes me smile.”
As the taxi driver accelerated away from the Vertex, Lillian pouted in response to Darnell’s compliment.
“Don’t give me these sweet words. I won’t be swayed by your flattery, and you don’t need to change the subject like this. Tell me, who was the girl you were feeding the bread to earlier?”
“Oh, her? Her name is Karlee. She accidentally hit Miss Fanshaw’s car, and that’s how we met,” Darnell honestly explained Karlee’s name, then downplayed the whole incident by saying, “I wasn’t actually feeding her bread just now.”
“I ate her breakfast accidentally. Feeling guilty, I gave her the last piece of bread to appease her anger. Our relationship is innocent,” he continued.
“If you don’t believe me, I can ask her to come out and explain it to you another day,” Darnell said seriously. “Let her tell you herself whether our relationship is pure or not.”
“Why should I care about whether you two are innocent or not?” Lillian’s expression softened as she tried to conceal her concern. “I’m just looking out for Miss Fanshaw. I’m worried that you might deceive an innocent girl.”
“You’re too suspicious. If you cause trouble by deceiving a young girl, not only will Miss Fanshaw be heartbroken, but the company’s reputation will also be damaged,” she added with a forced excuse. Then she furrowed her brow as if the name Karlee sounded familiar.
“I’m a decent person. How could I bully a young girl?” Darnell took the opportunity to lean against Lillian and feel her warm body. “By the way, Miss Snow, do you have any free time today?”
“Since Miss Fanshaw is not here and I don’t have much work on hand, we could take this opportunity to relax a bit. After we finish delivering the items, I’ll treat you to a movie,” he suggested.
Lillian initially felt happy but then looked downcast. “Today is not possible. I still have a lot of things to take care of. The two billion-dollar deal must be foolproof.”
“How about after we finish delivering the items, I treat you to ice cream?” Darnell sniffed Lillian’s fragrant hair and continued, “As a thank you for taking care of me all this time.”
Lillian didn’t respond loudly but shyly nodded her head.
The two soon arrived at the Harmony Hospital where they needed to handle some business. The Harmony Hospital was even more impressive than public hospitals in terms of its grandeur and size. It covered an area of over 30, 000 square meters with seven buildings, six of which had fifteen floors and one with eighteen floors. It boasted top-notch facilities and gathered many leading medical equipment and professionals in the country.
Wealthy people in Whiteville or foreigners mostly chose this hospital for treatment. Rumor had it that nurses who worked here for three years could afford to buy a BMW.
Looking at these magnificent buildings, the endless luxury cars, and the handsome tall security guards, Darnell couldn’t help but sigh in frustration at Jazmine’s wealth while feeling annoyed with himself for not demanding three or five million more from her on the golf course the other day.
Originally, Areli planned for Darnell to drive Lillian to the entrance of the hospital and let Lillian handle the paperwork alone because Areli knew Jazmine would explode if she saw Darnell.
However, Darnell was worried that Jazmine would give Lillian a hard time, so he decided to accompany her to deliver the documents. He also knew that he wasn’t welcome by Jazmine. Therefore, after getting out of the car, he deliberately went to a changing room and took a white coat while putting on a mask to completely conceal his identity.
Lillian looked at Darnell dressed as a doctor and covered her mouth as she chuckled softly before entering the elevator on the thirteenth floor to deliver the items.
Darnell waited at the elevator door on the thirteenth floor for fifteen minutes until Lillian completed her task.
“I didn’t expect everything to go so smoothly,” Lillian said.
Darnell smiled, “Let’s go get some ice cream.”
Lillian nodded and pressed the elevator button to go inside.
The elevator could hold up to fifteen people and nine people entered one after another. Except for Darnell and Lillian, all seven others were foreigners.
Darnell glanced at them and could tell that some were doctors while others were patients. He pulled Lillian into a corner and quietly waited for the elevator.
Ding!
The elevator stopped on the eleventh floor but opened with no one inside. Just as the elevator doors were about to close again, a man and a woman rushed over quickly.
The man in front kicked out with his foot, blocking the closing elevator doors with a loud bang.
The man’s shoes were somewhat wet. His kick left a damp shoe print on the elevator doors and splattered some dirty water onto a woman’s leg.
The woman frowned but remained silent.
After kicking open the elevator doors, the man swaggered in with the woman while chewing gum loudly in his mouth.
Darnell glanced at them and chuckled. It was quite a coincidence. They were familiar faces. It was Jett and Victoria.
Seeing him chewing gum, Darnell couldn’t help but wonder if he still enjoyed eating the cockroach back then.
Bang!
After entering the elevator, Jett punched the first-floor button while hitting his fist against it as if in a hurry to leave.
Seeing the shoe print on the elevator doors and hearing Jett chewing gum loudly again, the other seven foreigners shook their heads in disdain towards such behavior.
However, they all remained silent as if knowing that it was best not to meddle in other people’s affairs.
The elevator shook slightly before descending slowly. It seemed that Jett choked on his saliva from chewing gum as he coughed and spat out his gum.
The gum landed on the elevator doors before bouncing onto the floor, leaving behind traces of saliva. The seven men and women discreetly moved away from both sides. One girl almost broke down as she exclaimed,
“Oh my gosh! It’s too terrible!”
They all looked at Jett and Victoria with disdain for their actions.
Lillian blushed with embarrassment and felt disgusted by their lack of manners.
Jett seemed unfazed while Victoria frowned at him and nudged him with her elbow as if signaling him not to embarrass himself further.
Jett was momentarily stunned before his eyes darted around. He turned around towards everyone in the elevator and shouted,
“What are you looking at? Haven’t you seen someone spit out gum before? Spitting phlegm everywhere and littering is a tradition in Westergold that has been passed down for thousands of years.”
“If you can’t stand it, you can leave. This is Westergold. If you’re unhappy here, go back to your country!”
“I hate people like you who pretend to be virtuous gentlemen all day long, thinking that they are civilized individuals.”
After speaking, Jett coughed again before spitting phlegm on the floor, saying,
“What can you do about it? Bite me! Dare to lay a hand on me? I’ll immediately have someone deport all of you!”
His fluency in the native language combined with his use of local dialect made it easy for people to mistake him for being from Westergold.
The seven foreigners had unpleasant expressions on their faces. One woman sighed,
“The people of Westergold are beyond saving. The national quality is just too low.”
Lillian’s face burned with shame. She wished she could kick these “compatriots” away. It was truly embarrassing.
At that moment, Darnell asked Lillian for a pen and wrote a word in his palm.
Seeing these foreigners despise Westergolders like this made Jett smile triumphantly. Victoria also gave him a thumbs up as if acknowledging his excellent performance.
Smack!
Suddenly, Darnell stepped forward and slapped Jett across his face, clearly audible, shocking everyone in the elevator.
Darnell stood with righteous indignation, continuing to lecture, “Jett, as a Baycliff resident, how can you forget the pride of our people? You don’t deserve to be called a Baycliff!”
Jett was taken aback for a moment, then covered his cheek, seething with anger. “You bastard! Who are you?”
He couldn’t believe someone dared to challenge him, let alone slap him, and Victoria was equally stunned.
“You want to know who I am?”
Darnell raised his left hand, showing Jett the words inscribed in his palm. Dazed, Jett instinctively shouted, “Dad?”
“That’s right!”
Darnell delivered another slap. “I am your father.”
