“I am…yours?!” I stammered before my mouth parted slightly in surprise.
I was thrown off balance by his words.
I couldn’t believe that I meant something to me.
My heart swelled in pride, and I couldn’t contain my excitement. Throwing cautions into the wind, I wrapped my arms around him, squeezing him in a tight embrace. Tears hung in my eyes as I started to get emotional.
Aside from my family and Daphne, I never meant anything to anyone. I wasn’t anyone’s favorite person.
It still filled me with disbelief that I was special to the most powerful person. It felt good.
I wiped my tears with my thumb before brushing my lips against his.
We had barely started kissing when the shrill sound of my phone interrupted our moment.
I pulled away, grabbing my phone from my pocket before taking a few steps away from me.
My heart did a flip when the doctor’s number flashed boldly across the screen.
From my knowledge, it was unusual for a doctor to call at such an odd time of the night.
I took in deep breaths before dropping the call, convincing myself that he probably wanted to talk me into accepting the offer presented to me earlier.
I groaned inwardly, rolling my eyes. My mind was made up, and I wouldn’t hesitate to decline such offers even if he tripled the benefits attached to it.
It would be terrible to crush Alpha Casper’s feelings towards me, especially when we are developing a strong bond.
I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
Dropping his call again, I slid my phone into my pocket, putting it in vibration and noting mentally to tear the piece of paper given to me by him before anyone gets to read it.
“Who is that?” He asked, a streak of jealousy lined in his baritone voice, and I almost found myself laughing.
“Oh, it’s…” I chewed on my bottom lip nervously, unaware of what to say.
“I’m still waiting,” he chimed in, folding his arms and tapping his foot against the ground.
Heavy steam of jealousy oozed out of him, almost suffocating me.
“Is it a guy?”he asked. Despite trying to hide it, I could make out the hurt slipping from his cracked voice.
“Yes, but he is not what you think. He means nothing, and he is married with children,” I explained, raising my eyes to meet his twitching ones.
“Explain why he is calling you by 1am,” he said, not pleased with my explanation.
“Well…he thought I hadn’t found a job, so he is calling me concerning an offer. I will reply to him in the morning. Don’t worry about it,” I replied dismissively, waving it off as I thought of ways to divert his attention.
“Don’t tell me you were jealous over nothing.” I started.
“How else would I feel if someone wants what’s mine?” he grumbled, arching his brows.
I was about to take a few steps towards him when I felt my phone vibrating against the material that clung to my skin.
Cold breeze hit me, and I felt dizzy at once.
My heart dropped into the pit of my stomach, and in that moment, I knew something was wrong.
His constant calls pointed at a message. It could only mean one thing.
Mum might be dying, or Rose might be having an episode.
But the focus was more on mum because of her critical condition.
I hope I was wrong.
An eerie cold wind embalmed me as horror clawed its way to my heart.
I couldn’t explain the uneasiness that plastered me, throwing me into a state of restlessness and confusion.
“Let’s call it a night…Alpha. I’m sorry for…breaking into your safe space and flaunting your rules,” I managed to speak, hiding the nervousness in my voice.
Pushing him away was difficult, but I had to know the reason for the doctor’s consistent calling.
The vibration stopped, and I relaxed a bit, but it didn’t stop my heart from beating fast as a result of fear of the unknown.
I hated being anxious. It pushes me into the world of madness and overthinking.
“Would you stay in my room? Nothing will happen if you don’t want it to.” He begged with his eyes.
As tempting as the offer sounds, I couldn’t take it.
I needed to know what was happening with my mum and Rose.
“Not tonight, maybe some other time. I have a book to finish up,” I retorted before we locked lips for a few seconds.
The moment the vibration seized through me, I pulled away, almost running into my room.
“Goodnight,” I heard his faint voice behind me before sighing wearily.
I waited for half an hour to be sure that Alpha Casper had gone into his room before I pulled out my phone. It was the longest 30 minutes of my life.
My heart skipped a bit as I counted the number of missed calls from the doctor.
This wasn’t a good sign, but a part of me wanted to keep the candle of hope burning.
I dialed his number, waiting for a few seconds before the call got disconnected.
This was a bad sign.
Dialing the number again, I muttered a prayer while my heart pounded heavily against my ribs so loud that u could almost hear it.
I had never been more terrified in my life.
“Miss Parker!” His voice sounded in his end, flooding into my head.
“Hy,” I whispered in fear as I was terrified to speak.
“I am sorry for disturbing your sleep and calling you by this time, but there is a huge problem that requires your attention.”
I froze on the spot, shutting my eyes in anticipation for the bad news to hit me hard like a tornado.
Tears welled up in my eyes while my hands trembled. It was a miracle. My phone didn’t fall out of my ear.
He paused, waiting for me to speak, but I was so weak that my breathing became heavy.
He cleared his throat, resuming his words. “I called you because your mum had a very severe seizure that posed a threat to her life. She wanted to speak to you. That was the reason I kept calling. I know you must have fallen asleep.”
My body grew numb, and shivers ran down my spine. “How is mum? Is she fine?” I asked. Tears flowed freely from my eyes as I started to resent myself for ignoring his call because of Alpha Casper.
I was a bad daughter.
“She is stable for now, but we don’t know if it will recur. Plus, we also found a strange growth attached to one of her organs that needs surgical attention. If it is not removed within the next 24 hours, she won’t make it.”
I licked my chapped lips, digesting the doctor’s words as my insides raved with sadness.
For how long would I continue to live like this?
I hated that my life moved in an unending circle of unhappiness and misery. When I thought everything was in place, something always ruined it.
Maybe I was never destined to be happy by the Moon goddess.
I hope she was happy with the unending pain and torture of my miserable life.
“Miss Parker, are you there?” The doctor’s worried voice jerked me back to life as I wiped my tears with my thumb, sniffing before diverting my attention to him.
“You can go ahead with the surgery if that’s what will perfect her healing,” I said in a voice detached from emotion.
He should do whatever is wanted. I was drained and frustrated at this point.
I wanted to kill myself since that was the only way to end this misery.
“We can’t go ahead with the surgery without funds.” He withheld himself from scoffing.
“I don’t have the $2500 balance yet. I don’t know if it would be urgent.”
He let out a long sigh. “Actually, it’s not only the $2, 500 that would be needed. The surgery cost $42, 500, then she would be placed on examination, and she would also be given drugs and don’t forget chemotherapy for her and your sister.”
“Also, if the surgery isn’t successful, we would need more than that to carry out more tests so that we can eliminate this once and for all. Everything costs $45, 000.”
“But why is it so expensive?!” I lashed out uncontrollably, venting my anger at him.
“Of course it would be expensive, neither you nor your mum have insurance.”
“I’m sorry for yelling at you. I am broke and tired.” I sniffed, biting my lips to stop myself from crying. “How much is everything?”
“$45, 000,” he confirmed, making me almost paralyzed with shock. “You need to come to the hospital in the morning with $45, 000.”
How would I get that amount of money?
“By the way, the last offer still stands in case you don’t have money to pay for the medical bills,” he reminded, making dread curl up within me.
“The family of the man is still waiting for you to come around, and tomorrow is the last day.” His words sounded like a warning. They spelled the dangers of turning down the offer.
With pain ramming my chest, I let my phone slide on the bed before I dropped on the floor absent-mindedly.
I didn’t want to take the offer, but it seems this was the only choice.
Tangled in the web of confusion, I don’t know whether to meet Alpha Casper for financial assistance or to sign the contract with the doctor and sleep with the vegetable.
My mother’s life depended on this.
