I noticed how Dami’s body tensed up at my question and I realized that the topic was a sensitive one. She didn’t turn to look at me when she started talking. “That day has been etched in my mind. It was a day I always wanted to forget and wished it never happened. On that fateful day, Asher, Robin, and I had gone for the council meeting outside the capital. We were in the middle of the meeting when he got a mind link from one of his pack members. He was told there was a rogue attack on the castle and the rogues had taken Emily with them.” She explained as she continued to gaze at the sunset overlooking the garden. Her eyes seemed lost, like she was remembering the incident and her hands shook as she continued with the story.
“I had never seen Asher look so scared in his entire life. He was always fun and a cheerful buddy who always had a smile on his face and was always willing to help someone in need. All of that changed that day and I blamed myself for it even upto this day. If only I could turn back the hands of the clock.” She sighed and tried to refocus on the story. “So, we left Robin in the meeting and searched everywhere for Emily. Luckily, we were able to trace her using her scent but when we saw she was surrounded by rogue wolves and a witch. Asher couldn’t wait and rushed in to fight off the rogues but the witch was faster and invoked a spell on Asher, and under the influence of the spell he dived his claws into her heart killing her and their unborn pup. After killing her the witch and the rogues disappeared and the spell cleared from Asher. He wept, screamed, and shouted for hours and wouldn’t leave her side no matter how hard we tried to separate him from her body, but nothing worked. After that day he turned into a feral and ruthless being.”
She signed and turned to look at me but I remained quiet. I didn’t know how to react. I felt my insides churn with rage and a little hurt. Why would anyone do something like that to Asher if he was loving and friendly in the past? What was their motive? It didn’t make sense to me. Someone must have ordered the ambush and it has to be someone who knows Asher very well.
Were there any traces of the rogues and the witch after that day? I asked Dami with crippled brows
Dami sighed again “They were never found. Asher is still searching for them upto this day yet nothing has been found.”
Now I knew the story concerning Emily’s death; it only intensified the pain I felt inside. It was obvious how deep his love for her was and I had to accept the fact that he would never love anyone else as much as he had loved her.
I felt Dami’s eyes on me and I didn’t even bother to mask the pain that I felt at hearing the story.
“I have never liked Emily, for my brother there was something about her that seemed weird and sinister,” Dami muttered.
I stared at her, surprised by her words. Her golden amber eyes shone with deep raw emotions and it was easy to get lost in there because it reminded me of Asher’s.
Dami seemed like a nice person and for her not to like someone then there has to be something wrong with the person.
“It’s obvious you care so much about my brother,” She whispered. “You don’t need to hide it or be nervous about it. I can also see that he cares about you too but Asher won’t let you inside his heart easily, he will fight whatever feelings he has for you as long as he can. But please do me a favor, don’t ever give up on him. He really needs someone like you beside him.”
We were interrupted by a small bang and our eyes followed the sound of a flying arrow that got stuck in front of the door. The hairs on my skin stood on high alert and I shot a questioning gaze to Dami who looked more terrified like she had seen a ghost.
Something was wrong. I could feel something off happening here. Dami moved closer to me. My blue eyes were now very cautious and guarded. My ears picked up a weird sound, the more I listened, the closer it seemed to be drawing to where we were. It happened so fast that before I could register anything, I heard Dami’s sharp scream “Bend,”
My body instantly obeyed before asking any further questions. I leaned onto my thigh and just on cue, stray arrows kept flying blindly in the air in every direction.
“Hide Kayla!” I heard Dami’s voice beside me scream. A loud furious growl ran in the air as I jumped from the chair and absconded the arrow heading my way. The arrows kept flying around, hitting the doors and shattering the window glass.
“The arrows are poisonous, they are laced with wolfbane!” Dami shouted, warning me and an arrow grazed through my right arm. It wasn’t too deep, but my skin burned with pain from the effect of the poison.
The chaos that accompanied the flying arrows caused the ground to shake violently. Suddenly, many vicious-looking wolves emerged from the mountain to attack us. They were massive in numbers and we didn’t even stand a chance. Dami and I stared at each other in horror and there was something in her eyes that made me churn.
Could this be it for us, the day I finally said my final prayers? This was surely going to be a long and agonizing death. I could just feel it inside.
In a moment my whole life flashed before me and I wished and prayed for just one thing.
Asher, please come and save us.
