Kayla
He seemed to sense my anxiousness and he finally decided to speak.
“My sister invited me over for a party and after this incident today. I don’t want to leave you alone again, so you’re coming with me. We would spend a few days with her and we would return back to the castle.” He answered in an oddly calm voice.
I felt a sudden relief flow through me at his words. I wasn’t even aware that Asher had a sister, I have met his brother but he never mentioned his sister to me, not like we have had any personal discussion on that. I was curious whether his sister was anything like him, extremely cold and distant from everything around her.
When he finished packing, I followed him downstairs, and I saw that there were already a few omegas waiting for us.
“We will be gone for a few days. Do your duties diligently and be on your best behavior.” Asher instructed. They bowed in respect and choruses “Yes Alpha, our protector.”
When we got outside to the parking lot there were many of Asher’s warriors all lined up and waiting for him. “Y’all should take care of the castle while I’m out.”
“Alpha, are you sure you don’t want some of us to come with you?” One of the men who I believed was his beta asked.
Asher shook his head without a second thought to his words, “Dami’s home has always been a safe and secure area, there shouldn’t be any problems. But still, you all should be on alert and watch out for my mind links in case we encounter any danger.”
His beta nodded and opened the door of the carriage for me while Asher got in from the other side, the coachman drove off. We were both quiet for the entire ride, I wasn’t sure what to say to him after what he had disclosed though there were still many things that needed to be addressed but I chose not to talk about them at the moment. I hugged myself as his scent took over the inside of the carriage. I never thought that someone’s scent would have such a strong hold on me but with Asher, I was experiencing so many new things.
I couldn’t help but look at the way his throat moved when he swallowed or how focused he was on the road when we both knew that he was pretending. The pulse in his neck and his clenched jaw showed how much I affected him.
I knew he could tell that I was staring at him and enjoying the view. I knew he could feel my breath, my heartbeat, and the flutter of my eyelashes.
A part of me wanted to reach across and jump on his lap, straddle him, and take what was mine.
But will I ever have the courage to tell him this?
I already knew the answer before I thought about it. I wouldn’t tell him, No…. Not until I had completely lost it and couldn’t take it anymore. Asher would have to push me to the edge before I snapped like that.
But what would happen then? What would Asher do if he knew exactly how strongly I felt for him?
I didn’t have enough time to ponder on that thought before our carriage pulled up in a small cottage surrounded by a beautiful garden. Something about this home completely warmed my heart, there was this peaceful aura that called out to me and I hurriedly came out of the carriage but Asher beat me to it before I could blink. I watched in awe as he pulled a beautiful petite woman into his arms. I stood shocked staring at them, not because he was hugging another woman, but because it was the first time that I had seen a genuine smile on Asher’s face and I couldn’t stop looking at it.
It’s what I have wanted to experience from him, and now that I have gotten my wish I don’t want him to ever stop smiling. Once more I felt a sharp stab of jealousy at knowing that Emily got to see that smile so easily without even having to try for it.
I shook my head at that thought, I needed to stop thinking about a woman who was no longer alive. I decided to focus on the woman in his hands. She looked exactly like Asher so I didn’t have to wonder who she was.
She pulled back from his hug and turned to me with curious eyes. “Is this her?” she quietly asked him. He followed her gaze and an unreadable emotion crossed his face.
He eventually nodded and extended his hand towards me.
“Dami, meet my wife Kayla.”
The genuine smile on Dami’s face completely blew me away. Unlike Asher, she looked like a bright blooming sunflower in a beautiful garden. Her beauty wasn’t lacking either with her long blonde wavy hair and her pretty silver eyes.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Kayla.” She said as she shook my hand softly. “I’m sorry I didn’t visit earlier to welcome you into our small family.”
I returned her smile. “I’m really happy to meet you as well. You’re nothing like Mr grouchy Mean Toad over here.”
Dami’s eyes widened before she doubled over in laughter. Asher scowled at the two of us and Dami’s pure joy lightened the tension between us.
“Let’s go inside.” She invited me in. “I prepared some dishes after Asher informed me that he was coming a day early.”
Inside Dami’s home was just as warm and cozy as the outside. It had some magical touch in it that immediately made you feel like you were in your own home. After a few minutes, Asher left me alone with his sister and went out.
We spent the rest of the day talking, sitting outside the patio staring at the view in front of us.
“Asher always goes horse riding whenever he comes to visit me,” Dami informed me. ” He will be back in an hour or two so don’t miss him too much.”
I glanced at her and didn’t realize it was obvious that I was already missing Asher and wanted to know where he had disappeared.
“Can I ask you something?” I asked as I took a seat next to her. She was gazing at the garden of rosebuds when she turned to me with a small nod.
“Sure, feel free to ask me anything.”
I played with my fingers in my lap, not sure of how to go ahead with the questions so it didn’t seem as if I was intruding but I needed some answers, and Dami seemed like my only option.
” What killed Emily?”
