He helped her sit up and she smiled and said “I’m fine” but she knows deep inside her that she’s far from being fine. The pains plunging her body were severe.
Richard helped her into the restroom and when she returned, he decided he would call the servants to order. Why wouldn’t anyone be available or could it be that Anna didn’t use the call button?
He wanted to talk to her about Luna Wesley that she was out of prison. She’d regained her freedom but changed his mind concerning it. It’s of no use, telling her the woman he used to love is back at the time when she was feeling so sick and vulnerable.
Next morning, Richard Summoned the servants and told them to pay a close watch on their madam. He also phoned the hospital and requested for special nurses to be available, taking care of her and taking turns and shifts.
“Isn’t Adrian aware of his mother’s condition?” Old man Lester demanded. What’s the use of having a child that would not be there for you at such a critical time in one’s life?
That boy could suspend his vacation and come over to check on his mother. Just what kind of a son has Richard birthed?
“I’ve told him. He’d been checking on her through me and often calls her too” Richard replied. Will Adrian leave everything else because his mother was sick, what if she died, he would shut down the entire conglomerate?
“You don’t have to bother him. He’d been checking on me daily through phone calls” Anna defended weakly. She doesn’t want Adrian to feel bothered by her illness. She’ll be fine eventually.
Grandfather nodded. That’s it. He was concerned why a child wouldn’t come over to check on his mother but the parents, both defended him. Yes, they give reasons why he shouldn’t come.
What’s the use of coming to see his mother when the phone was there. He could use the phone in replacement for his presence. He would step aside and watch henceforth.
If he dies today, Adrian would simply use the phone to give directives and that’s all. His presence would not be needed.
What a pathetic situation awaits him at his end?
Just as he was trying to leave for work, one of his bodyguards informed him that someone was there to see the madam. When he inquired further, he was told it’s a man and had no appointment with her earlier.
When Richard invited the guest over, he was surprised when he introduced himself as detective Rodgers. He is investigating an incident and would like to speak with Mrs Lester.
He apologised for coming over without being invited nor was an appointment booked. He sincerely apologised and explained that he got the home address from a source.
Richard wanted to probe further, especially the source where he got his address, but he shoved it aside. He invited him over and sat down willing to know why he wanted to meet his wife.
Rodgers apologised again to Anna Lester and started by saying he was into a certain research and investigation and along the way, her name popped up.
“What exactly do you want?” Anna asked, her gaze fierce and staring at the detective. She doesn’t feel comfortable and besides some old incidents that happened in the past, she’s never had an issue of being investigated.
And for the past, she’d settled it. There isn’t anything anyone can find out about it. It’s in the past and that’s where it’s going to remain forever.
“Do you know or probably come across someone by the name Susanna Wesley?” Rodgers asked, at this time, his eyes were fierce, penetrating and mind reading.
There was a long silence and Anna Lester was staring at him in fear. Unconsciously, her body shivers. Richard’s gaze was alternating between Rodgers who kept his gaze intently on his wife and Anna.
He knows Anna better than anyone else and he could perceive uneasiness in her. He waited, wanting to know what her response would be? That name Wesley brought him back to think about Luna briefly.
Eventually when Anna would answer, she responded “I don’t know who answers that name and why are you asking me about it?” She replied, her lips trembling.
Many years have passed but when she heard that name, she remembered someone bearing that name a long time ago. How can he come to her to ask questions about it?
“Are you sure, Mrs Lester?” Rodgers asked . From her body language and silence, he knows that she knows but doesn’t want to say it.
“Yes, I’m sure” she snapped at him in response. He should get going at once. What the heck. No matter what happens, she would never accept that confession.
“How about I produce a video clip of that woman Susanna Wesley and how she got the baby away…”Rodger demanded, throwing a bait at her. Her actions would determine if he should proceed with interrogating her or not.
“Are you stupid? How dare you come in here without a pre appointment? You dare to sprout nonsense in my home? I am not feeling well at all and despite that, I spared you an audience and you are talking nonsense?” She thundered, her complexion ashen and her body shaking vigorously.
Despite her health condition, making her weak and fragile, she was trembling and all sweaty all of a sudden and Richard was surprised. He went over and held her in an embrace.
“Did you hear that, Richard? This detective is trying to drag us into things we know nothing about. Send him away now, it’s like I would die if he remained here another two minutes” Anna requested.
She wants this man to go away and leave them at once. She needs to make some calls and put a stop to it. For many years, that woman has been forgotten but why is there a sudden uprising of investigation again?
“I’d take you to your room instead” Richard decided quickly. He wants to know why this detective asked his wife a question that sent her agitating this way, despite being ill.
He called the servants and two female maids rushed over quickly and helped the madam away towards her room. Not satisfied, she turned herself and thundered:
Get out already. Don’t listen to him honey, he is up to something…” she was insisting, eager to return and throw the man out herself. She’s worried about Richard finding out a hidden and buried secret.
“Don’t worry, I’ll handle everything” Richard assured her and waited until she was out of sight. Then he turned to glance at Rodgers, his expression calm and stern.
“I’ll come again but this time, give me date and time” Rodgers declared flippantly. There is still more to find out from this woman. He would definitely return.
“What are you investigating and who are you working for?” Richard demanded. Something is amiss. Anna has sold herself out by her outburst and words and he wants to know what it’s all about.
“I’m detective Rodgers, a private detective in charge of investigating the whereabouts of a missing baby many years ago” he replied casually and wanted to leave.
Richard raised a hand and asked him to pause. If Rodgers hadn’t shown him his ID he would have doubted him. But he is indeed a private cop and which missing child would he be investigating and interrogating Anna about?
“Can I know more about this case?” Richard asked and Rodgers declined politely before stepping out. Once he left, Richard became confused.
He needs to talk to Anna immediately. He went upstairs towards her room and just as he approached her door, he heard her words…
“… Luna Wesley is at it again. That woman would not rest until I have her killed. She’s trying to investigate the whereabouts of her son…”
Richard froze and his body trembled.
