Even though I was worried about my brother, I was more concerned about gossiping about girly things with Preggo.
Mom never allowed us to keep close friends because she was too scared that it would expose our medical condition to the pack.
I knew that the pack knowing about us was going to be very detrimental to our rulership and also power control.
“Hey! Ashley. I asked you a question?” Preggo’s voice cut into my thoughts.
“Oh, sorry. What was your question again?” I asked, unsure of where I lost her, and hoped that she was not offended that I had my mind on some other things.
“Oh, I asked what the most attractive thing about him is to you?” Preggo repeated her question, gently.
“Oh, I like his beautiful smile, his dreamy eyes, his lofty title as the supreme wolf Alpha, and everything else, preggo. This man is the most perfect human to ever walk on the face of the earth.” I said, and my mind drifted to Wilson.
Mom did not seem convinced that he was fine, even though I kept reassuring her. She had insisted on going home, and it took more effort on my part to convince her not to worry that her son was fine.
I felt the sudden urge to go out to call her or even Wilson, so I would know what was going on with each of them.
“Ashley, are you sure you are fine? You kept dazing out, and it cannot be anything good because your face shows how upset you are. What is going on? What happened? What are you so worried about?” Preggo asked me reassuringly and for one crazy moment, I actually considered telling her everything that was burdening me. I thought better of it seeing that I was not the only party involved and Wilson already had eyes for her.
“It’s nothing. Wilson is not feeling so well, so my mind keeps drifting to him once in a while. That’s all, nothing else Preggo.” I said, trying my best to sound as calm as I could muster.
Preggo gave me a long thoughtful look and then casually shrugged her shoulders.
“Alright, if you say so. I am beginning to feel sleepy Ashley. I do hope that you do not mind?” She asked me gently, and I immediately thanked the moon goddess for giving me the perfect escape without me having to do anything.
“Alright, preggo. No big deal. I was about to head home anyway. Take care of yourself and my little munchkins.” I said, feigning happiness, and left the room.
As soon as I got outside, I brought out my phone to call my mom, and then my screen lit up.
When I checked who the caller was, I was surprised to see my mom. I immediately panicked and began to think of the worst thing that could have happened because I was sure that she had defied me and gone home.
“Hello Mom” I greeted calmly.
“Hello, Ashley. You need to come home now. Something came up.” She said, and I could hear the tears in her voice.
“Mom? Is everything okay?”I asked, anxiety building in my chest and clogging my breathing.
“Just come home. I cannot talk over the phone” she said and ended the call on me before I could say anything else.
My mind began to race and I immediately made for the exit to the hospital. I hopped in a cab and hurried him home. When I got to the gate, I banged at it until the guard came and saw it was me, then he hurriedly opened the gate.
“Open this damn gate!” I screamed like a mad person and as soon as the gate cracked open, I dashed inside and headed for the stairs.
“Here, Ashley. Do not go into your brother’s room. He is sleeping now.” Mom whispered from her office and motioned for me to come into her office with her hands.
“If he is sleeping that’s what could have happened that would have warranted you calling me and scaring me like that…”
My words trailed off and my mouth opened in shock when I saw Kirsten’s limp body on the floor.
“What happened?” I asked, tears welling up in my eyes.
“Your brother! Twisted her neck and killed her instantly.” Mom answered me dejectedly. I could see the fear and worry evident on her face. She had sacrificed so much for this and really has not been appreciated enough.
“Wilson killed Kirsten?” I asked my mom, who was dabbing at her tears with a small hand towel.
“Yes. I rushed home and met him doing that. I had even gone everywhere to look for him. It was not until I heard Kirsten scream that I figured that it was when she came up for her usual cleaning. By the time I got in here, I was too late. What do you think we should do about this? About disposing of her body, too.” Mom said, her eyes looking tired and weak.
I thought about it hard and long, it was a lot scary for me because it could have been me. I have the same medical condition and I got very scared that I might have an episode and hurt someone like this too.
“No! Stop that thought, Ashley! You are not going to ever let it get to that point.” I promised myself.
Having to handle Kirsten’s death like she was not a big part of our lives was a problem. She was the daughter of one of the oldest maids here, and everyone loved her before she died.
As a way of not letting her children suffer, she had kept Kristen in my mom’s care. Knowing now that she would have been safer in those low-end streets broke my heart, and I wished that I had not let Wilson go, or I had been there with him.
I wished that I had called on Mom. She would have known the best way to handle such matters.
