Callie took her medication, and the abdominal pain eased significantly, but she was still worried about the Oconnor Group, unable to eat or sleep well.
The hotel’s internet connection was poor, so she took her laptop to the hotel cafe. Watching the stock market, she knew things were not going smoothly on Nelson’s end.
“Baby, can you hear me?” Callie gently touched her belly and whispered, “Your father is going through a tough time right now. Let’s witness him getting through this safely together, okay?”
“If there’s a next life, make sure to choose me.” Callie’s expression was very gentle as she spoke.
At that moment, a figure entered her line of sight. It was the woman who had been in Nelson’s room yesterday, Jaquan’s assistant, Charlotte.
Her voice followed, “Mr. Scott, I understand your instructions. I will handle it.”
Charlotte also saw Callie. Their eyes met, and there was no avoiding it.
She nodded slightly in acknowledgment and was about to leave when Callie called out, “Wait, Charlotte.”
Charlotte stopped, her dark eyes clear. “Miss Marsh.”
“Don’t you know my identity? Why not call me Mrs. Oconnor?” For the first time, Callie revealed her identity. She could sense that Charlotte was not very friendly towards her.
“Mr. Oconnor doesn’t like others announcing Mrs. Oconnor’s existence in public, so I didn’t.” Every word and action showed her understanding of Nelson.
Callie wasn’t angry. “Have a seat.”
“I have things to do.”
Callie smiled. “I said, have a seat.”
Charlotte was slightly taken aback, not expecting Callie to mimic Nelson’s authoritative demeanor so well. She pulled out a chair and sat down.
“May I ask about your family background, Charlotte?” Callie asked as she had the waiter bring another cup of Americano and placed it in front of Charlotte.
“I grew up without parents in an orphanage. From high school to university, I relied on Scott Group’s sponsorship to get by, so it wasn’t very good,” Charlotte answered calmly.
“So you are quite grateful and became Jaquan’s assistant right after graduation?” There was a hint of sarcasm in her words. “I see the bracelet on your wrist is quite valuable.”
Charlotte nodded again. “My life belongs to Mr. Scott.”
“So you do whatever he asks.” Callie said softly, “No need to avoid it; Jaquan has told me that the crisis of Oconnor Group involved him. So you came to Afupshire for him too.”
“You know everything.”
“But I want to know where Scott Group got such substantial capital from. Just one engineering flaw could drag Oconnor Group into this mess. Can you tell me, Charlotte?” Callie leaned forward slightly, the necklace around her neck swaying gently in the air.
Charlotte met her gaze and smiled. “I’m just Mr. Scott’s personal assistant; I really don’t know.”
“Then let me guess, is it the Ellison family?”
Charlotte’s smile froze; she hadn’t expected Callie to guess so quickly.
“Marilyn?”
As soon as Callie asked, she knew the answer but wanted confirmation.
Under pressure, Charlotte glanced at her phone and seemed relieved by what she saw. She answered Callie, “You guessed right. The Ellison family targeted Oconnor Group and teamed up with Scott Group to invest heavily in Oconnor Group’s shares. As far as I know, this situation won’t improve anytime soon.”
Callie’s expression changed slightly.
