Jayce’S POV
A FEW DAYS LATER.
“An ambush. Midnight, on Saturday.” Reed informs over the phone.
“Got it.” The call ends. I slide the phone in my suit jacket and cover my face with my palms, sighing heavily. As advised by Reed, I’ve been acting nonchalant towards Lloyd and he has no idea I know about his schemes. Holding meetings with him, discussing pack issues with him, seeing him makes me sick in my stomach. Only the moon goddess knows how much I refrain myself from hitting him every time he flashes me his fake smile.
Backbiter.
Traitor!
Now, I understand Reed’s dire desire to kill him.
He’s the devil himself.
I only realize we have arrived at the castle when my seat door is opened by a guard. I lifelessly step out of the car and stand straight, looking around the castle premises. This place will be chaotic on Saturday. I walk into the house and head straight to my bedroom. I still haven’t told Alora about what I found out, but now that I know when the ambush is going to take place, I need to tell her so she doesn’t get shocked when the day comes.
“Hey baby. Welcome home.” She greets me with the sweetest smile, planting the sweetest kiss on my lips. I wrap my arms around her tiny waist and deepen the kiss that sends electric current throughout my body. Coming home to her and our unborn child is my favorite part of the day.
“How are you doing today, my love?”
“I’m doing just fine.”
“And our little cupcake?” I stop down and kiss her stomach.
“He didn’t cause any problems for me today.”
“Good boy!” I plant another kiss on her stomach before looking at her. “You look beautiful.” Her cheeks turn red as she blushes hard.
“Thank you.”
“Come here…” I lead the way to the bed. “There’s something I need to tell you.” We both sit on the bed.
“What’s that?”
“It’s… it’s quite serious. A bit scary.” The smile on her face wipes off.
“Is something wrong?”
“Yes. Something is wrong. It has alway been.”
“Jayce, you are scaring me.”
“You shouldn’t be. Reed and I will figure it out.”
“Can you tell me what’s going on already?” She asks, agitated. I plant a gentle kiss on her forehead and exhale heavily.
“I’m sure you know about my enmity with Jovan.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Well, it’s not just some childhood grudge he doesn’t want to let go of. Jovan wants to kill me and take over as Alpha of this Pack and Supreme Alpha of the entire werewolf world.” Her mouth falls open in shock. I nod. “Yeah and I recently found out that my beta, Lloyd, has been helping him cause trouble for us all this time. The ambush in the woods, the attack on you at the supermarket, Reed’s accident, Lloyd was the mastermind behind all that.”
“No, fucking way!” Her face grows ashen. Her skin loses all color, becoming chalk white. “Why would Lloyd do such a thing? He is your Beta for goodness sake!” She cries bitterly. “He’s supposed to be on your side.”
“I honestly have no idea what I did to offend Lloyd, but he’s out to get me and it’s either I stop him or he succeeds. They even went as far as getting Alpha Myles on their side.”
“What?” She asks, aghast.
“I believe they made him understand that once I get killed, he can take you back to his pack and make you bear him an heir so he will not be dethroned.” Tears spill down her cheeks like a waterfall.
“You have to stop him!” She cries. “I … I don’t want to go back to that hellhole of…”
“Shhhh… none of that is going to happen. Reed and I are going to stop them. He has been tailing them without their knowledge and he finally has information on when they plan to strike. We’ll be ready for them.”
“I’m scared.” I take her in my arms and plant gentle kisses on her head.
“No harm is going to come your way. I promise.”
“I’m scared for you, Jayce. You are going against three powerful men.”
“I’m not going against them alone. I have Reed and my soldiers. Besides, I’m the supreme Alpha. I have way more power than anyone thinks I do. I’ll be fine. Everything will fine.”
“Sure?”
“I promise.” I keep rocking her in my arms.
I can’t wait for Saturday to come so I can finally put an end to all this madness.
Reed’S POV.
“I noticed you’ve been quite moody since you got home. Is everything alright?” Halle asks, joining me on the sofa. I pull her into my arms and kiss her hair.
“There’s trouble.” She backs away from me, looking worried.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s a long story.”
“Make it short.” She says curtly. I breathe hard, training my eyes on her face. She looks eager to hear what I have to say.
“Jovan, Lloyd and Alpha Myles of the Blue Pearl Pack plan to ambush the castle on Saturday and kill Alpha Jayce.” She bursts into laughter. I watch in awe as she laughs so hard, tears leak from her eyes. When she’s finally calm again, she squints at me.
“Well done, babe. You’ve succeeded in making me wheeze with laughter.”
“This is not a joke, Halle. I’m serious. They plan to kill Alpha Jayce.”
“Then they are fools. They won’t succeed.”
“They believe they will.”
“And Lloyd, isn’t he the Beta whom you work with at the castle?”
“He’s the one.”
“Why is trying to get the Alpha killed?”
“We don’t know why.” She goes mute and examines my face for a long time.
“You are serious.” I groan, completely frustrated.
“Of course, I am!”
“Jesus Christ! Are they even serious? How dare they!” Now she’s fuming.
“We’ll kill them all on that day.”
“I wanna be there. You know I can fight.”
“That’s not going to happen and this is not up for a debate.” She goes mute. “Tomorrow, Alpha Jayce and I will meet with the commanders to plan on how to go about it. We can stop this ambush from happening, but we don’t want to. We want them to give us the opportunity to deal with them once and for all.”
“To kill them. You mean?” She rephrases my words.
“Yes.”
“Perfect.” My eyes widen in surprise. She chuckles. “Kill your enemy before he kills you. I believe in that.”
“You are a miracle.” I squeeze her tight in my arms.
I’m excited for Saturday.
