Reed’S POV.
After the incident that took place at my house last night, even though Halle stayed as I requested, she didn’t say a word to me. All attempts I made to start a conversation with her were futile and when I woke this morning, she was long gone. I have been trying her cell for hours now, but she wouldn’t take my calls even now that I’m standing in front of her apartment.
I’m frustrated. I don’t know what else to do.
I knock on the door like I’ve been doing for the past three minutes, but there’s still no response from.
She’s in there. I can smell her.
“Come on baby, just open up. We can talk this through. We don’t have to take this route. Please open the door. Halle?” Silence answers my call. I lean my forehead against the wall and groan in frustration.
This is killing me.
I’d rather she opens this door and screams at me, hits me, calls me all sorts of names than to block me out like this. It makes it impossible for me to know what she’s thinking, how she’s feeling – well, I know she feels terrible – or what she is up to. I’m so damn scared right now.
“Halle. Baby, please open the door.” I beg. My voice is a broken mess. There’s a snake in my throat that is hard for me to swallow. The tears in my eyes will break loose sooner or later. My heart is doing backflips in my chest. I’m losing my damn mind.
“Go away, Reed. Go away and stop making things harder for me.” A tormented kind of euphoria spreads through every pore of my body as I jerk away from the door and stare at it.
She spoke.
Halle just spoke to me from inside.
“Baby, please open the door. Please.” I beg yet again. My heart twists alongside the door lock and as it swings open, revealing her face, all I can do is breath. Our eyes lock and something passes between us. My anxiety grows with each passing second. She’s staring at me like I’m a piece of puzzle she can’t solve. It requires unbearable effort to keep myself from hugging her. “Halle.” I call. She slaps my face with a stern look.
“What do you want?”
“For us to talk.”
“About what exactly? Just a few days ago, you kept singing about how you’d reject your mate the minute you set eyes on her, because I’m the one you want to be with. But it’s been over twenty four hours now since you found her and you haven’t made any effort to do as you promised and you expect me to be okay with that? Are you having second thoughts, Reed?”
“No! No, of course not! I’m not having any second thoughts. Baby you are the one…”
“Stop lying, okay!” She cuts me off with a loud scream. Her voice echoes throughout the hallway. Thank goddess I made sure no one had access to this floor on my way here till the time I leave. “If you want us to talk, if you want to prove to me that you aren’t having second thoughts about us, about continuing this relationship, you have until tomorrow morning to reject your mate like you promised, if not, I’ll move on with my life.” She proceeds to slam the door to my face.
I feel sick to my stomach.
I’m a pile of flesh groveling towards my car in the driveway. I’m a walking corpse. I should call a driver to come take me home, but I’m too tired to wait for him to come over and take me so I drive myself, hoping I don’t crash into a pole, or fall off a cliff and die. I don’t think the Moon goddess will be generous enough to give me a third chance at life.
Luckily for me, I made it home in one piece. I’m driving into the premises when I spot a man standing by the sidewalk, dressed in black and looking very suspicious.
I hope he wasn’t sent by Jovan or Lloyd to kill me, because with the anger and frustration brewing in my heart right now, I’m going to chop him into pieces and deliver his body parts at the doorsteps of various members of his family, starting with his mother.
“Omega Reed.” He calls, approaching me as I alight from my car.
“And you are?” I take a defensive pose before him.
“My name is Klein, I’m Madison’s boyfriend.”
“You’re who’s boyfriend?” I ask, confused.
“Madison.” He repeats the name and that’s when I recall that I have a mate called Madison.
Shit!
She’s in my house right now. I have to go in there and deal with her as well.
Holy spirits!
I look at the guy standing in front of me and furrow my brows.
“So… you are Madison’s boyfriend, huh?”
“Yes, I am.”
“And what am I supposed to do with that information? Why does it concern me?”
“You can’t be with her.” He takes a step forward. His face is masked with a very serious expression, it almost makes me laugh. “You can’t accept her.” His tone doesn’t sound like he’s bluffing. I’m tempted to laugh.
“Why not?” I ask, not because of anything. I’m just genuinely curious to know what gave this guy the balls to come here and try to fight with me over a girl who’s supposed to be my mate.
“Because she’s pregnant with my child.” My jaw drops, eyes widen in disbelief, as if a sudden jolt of electricity has coursed through my veins, leaving me momentarily stunned.
Pregnant.
Holy goddess!
“What do you mean she’s pregnant?”
“Do you want me to explain in detail how it happened?”
“Of course not!”
“I thought as much! Look…” He joins his hands together, taking a step forward. “Madison and I are very much in love. She’s only throwing herself at you because of who you are and the kind of life you can give her…” A frustrated chuckle follows that statement as he takes inventory of my surroundings and then the mansion. “I can’t give her any of this and … and it’s something I’m not proud of, but we’ve been through so much together. We haven’t acquired any wealth yet, but we are on our way somewhere. Somewhere much better. Omega Reed, I rejected my mate to be with Madison because I love her and she promised she would do the same once she found hers, but she doesn’t seem to want to do that anymore. That’s why I’m asking you to help me. I know about your girlfriend Halle. I know you love her. Do both of us a favor by rejecting Madison. Please.”
What kind of sick game is this?
