Jayce’S POV.
“Alpha Jayce.” Lloyd calls respectfully as he sits upright on his hospital bed the moment I walk into his ward. I couldn’t come over to check on him yesterday after the ambush, so I decided to come over today and I’m happy to see that his wounds have all healed. He seems to be waxing strong.
“Lloyd.” I walk over to his bed and stand by his side. “How are you feeling this morning?” I ask, concerned.
“Better. I feel a lot Better, thank you. Alpha Jayce, you didn’t have to bother coming here to check on me.”
“That’s not something I can stop myself from doing, Lloyd. We were in that fight today. We could have died before Reed showed up with other soldiers, but the Moon goddess kept us alive, so it’s impossible for me not to come check on someone who made a narrow escape from death, just like me.” He chuckles.
“When you put it like that, it makes me even more scared than I was on that battlefield. Thank you very much for coming, Alpha. I really appreciate it.” I simply smile and nod my head.
“Any serious injuries?”
“Uh… I had a few broken bones yesterday, but they’ve all healed. I’m fine now.”
“I’m happy to hear that. Reed is working with the security to find out what happened. If it was a planned act by someone from this pack, or just a normal rogue attack, but I’m positive it has to be the former.”
“Someone from this pack will have the audacity to pull off such a stunt?” He asks, terrified.
Even I am terrified of the thought. That someone would go all the way to strike a deal with the Rogue King to rally five hundred soldiers to ambush me in the woods. It’s scary to think that my subject would hate me so much to go to that extent.
“I’m hoping that isn’t the case, but we have to be realistic here. I guess we’ll have to wait to see what Reed gathers.”
“Yeah.” He calmly nods his head.
“When will you be discharged?”
“Soon. I’m just waiting for the doctor to come in and do one last check up before he lets me go.”
“Good. Take the rest of the week off so you can heal properly. Reed and I will handle things at the office.”
“Thank you very much Alpha.”
“For nothing. I’ll take my leave now. Have a nice day.”
On my way out of the ward, I mindlink Reed to meet me in my office so we can talk on how to go about investigating the ambush.
********************************************
Reed’S POV.
Alpha Kai and I have spent almost two hours talking about the possible ways to investigate the ambush even though I already know who orchestrated it.
It’s no one else, but Reed and after connecting the dots, they lead me to the fact that he is working with Jovan, Alpha Jayce’s step brother.
Nonetheless, I can’t divulge this information to Alpha Jayce yet because I have no proof yet. If I do, I will be putting myself in a difficult spot, because it’ll seem like I’m accusing a high ranking member of treason and failing to prove such an allegation could lead to me getting thrown in prison or banished from the pack.
I can’t let that happen.
Alpha Jayce needs me.
I’m going to act like I know nothing, but I’ll pay a close eye on him so I can try to gather some evidence, even though it’ll be difficult right now because Lloyd knows I have my eyes on him.
“You and the security will do as we have planned and we’ll see how it goes. Does that sound okay?”
“It sounds perfect.”
“Good. I was at Lloyd’s ward earlier to check on him. Luckily his injuries and broken bones have all healed, but I have given him a few days off so he can recuperate properly.”
“But I thought you said his injuries have all healed.” I ask with creased brows.
“Yes, they have. But he needs to rest.”
“You didn’t need to.”
“I’m an Alpha. I can’t afford to rest.”
“And he’s the Beta. He can’t afford to rest either!” I firmly state, mostly irritated by the fact that the culprit is being treated nicely.
For what Lloyd did, he deserves to burn in hell’s eternal sulphur and I will make sure of that. It’s just a matter of time!
“Reed, don’t be a pain in the ass.” He pushes a file towards me. “You and I are going to fill in for him for the rest of the week, so deal with that.” I groan in fury and pick up the file, rising to my feet. “I don’t remember dismissing you.”
“My time is up nonetheless.” I turn around and head for the door.
Flowers bloom in my heart when I hear his soft laughter.
I swear I’m going to kill Lloyd for taking Jayce’s kindness for granted.
I walk out of Alpha Jayce’s office building and as I cross over to mine, I see someone familiar limping towards me.
It’s Jovan.
I stop walking and study him closely.
That body build, that height. Very familiar.
And the fact that he’s limping, makes me conclude that he’s the one who attacked Halle at my house last night. Anger brews in my veins. I want to rush over and pick up from where I stopped last night, but I can’t.
Just like my speculations with Lloyd, I have no evidence and false accusation is frowned upon in this pack.
“Alpha Jovan.” I call as we both approach each other. “Another sprained ankle.” I point out, looking at the ankle and smiling. “You seem to be getting into a lot of fights these days.
“Why must you only make the assumption that I got this injury from a fight? Don’t people trip and hurt themselves?”
“Ahh… I see… so it was an accident.”
“Exactly.”
“If that’s the case then, be more careful. It won’t keep myself from laughing if I see you with missing teeth next time.” I wink and walk past him. I can feel his scorching gaze on my back as I walk on. It makes me smile.
I’m going to get them.
It’s just a matter of time.
