Jovan’S POV.
Other than Jayce, Alora and Reed, there’s someone else I have been watching very closely in the castle. I have been monitoring his movements and his interactions with servants and my brother, Jayce and I think I’ve come up with something.
That person is no one else but Lloyd, the Beta of the Pack and the Supreme Beta of the entire werewolf world.
The first thing I noticed was the fact that despite his status as the Beta of this pack, he doesn’t really mingle with Jayce as much as Reed does. I also got to notice that he and Reed are sworn enemies.
From the brief encounters I’ve had with Lloyd, I can sense some strange energy from him. I feel like he does not like Jayce.
Yes.
I know that sounds absurd given he’s the Beta of the pack, but I know what I see in Lloyd’s eyes whenever I look into them.
It’s not the “I’ll dedicate my life to serving the Alpha ” kind of look. It’s the look that tells you that he’s tired of pretending. That he hates Jayce and that he wishes someone else would ascend the throne.
So on that note, I invited him so we could have a talk.
What I’m about to do is very risky. This talk could either put me in grave danger or add another man to my team. Either way, I’m ready to take the risk by asking him whose side he’s willing to take in this war.
“Alpha Jovan.” A guard calls through minlink. “Beta Lloyd is here to see you.”
“Send him in.” I order and block the mindlink. I heave out a heavy sigh and adjust on my seat. I don’t know why, but my heart is racing.
It’s not supposed to do that.
Lloyd is Beta and I’m an Alpha. His rank is below mine. I don’t have to be scared about talking to him.
A firm knock sounds on the door, almost making me tremble in my seat.
“Come in.” I signal and the door is immediately pushed open and Lloyd steps in. I clear my throat and lean against the backrest of my chair, my eyes trained on his face as he approaches me.
“Alpha Jovan.” He calls with a slight bow.
He just addressed me as Alpha. He even bowed to me with respect. I like him.
Reed has never done that.
“Beta Lloyd. I’m happy you could squeeze out time to come see me despite the short notice. Please have a seat.” I show him the chair across from me and he nods and takes it.
“Is there something you need me to do for you?” He asks quietly. I lean back, rub my palms and flash him a smile.
I don’t want to beat around the bush on this issue.
“Do you like working for my brother, Jayce?” His brows furrow. Confusion spreads across his face.
“I… I don’t think I understand your question.” I look at him, smiling and thinking of how to rephrase the question.
“I’m sure by now you are aware of the silent power struggle that’s going on in this castle right now. My brother is trying to keep his position as Alpha and I’m trying to take his position as Supreme Alpha.” he goes silent. The look on his face is neutral as his eyes drill holes in my face.
It’s impossible to know if he’s amused with what I’m saying or not.
“I’m aware of that.” He finally responds and I nod my head.
“Good. That’s why I want to find out something.”
“What’s that?”
“If a war were to break out right now, a power struggle, and you had to pick sides to fight with, would you take the fight on Jayce’s side? Are you going to put your life on the line for him so he could win and be the Supreme Alpha again?” I ask, giving him a very careful look. He clears his throat and adjusts himself on his seat.
There’s an unsure look in his eyes. His jaws are tense and so is the look he’s giving me.
I’m trying to keep a confident look, but deep down , I’m scared. Scared that he might be a die hard fan of Jayce and I just exposed my plan to him.
“May I ask a question?” Lloyd breaks the silence.
“Yes, go ahead.”
“Why are you asking me this question?”
I pause. Stare at him long and hard and clear my throat.
“Well…” I rub my palms together as I keep my eyes trained on his face. “The truth is, I’ve noticed something very interesting about you.”
“And what could that be?”
“You are the Beta of this pack, which means you are supposed to have a very close relationship with the Alpha, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Instead the person who’s close with the Alpha is Reed. Everyone knows Reed is Jayce’s right hand man. You’d have to pass through him to get to Jayce.”
“So what conclusion has that observation of yours influenced?”
“You haven’t bothered to have a close relationship with Jayce because you don’t care about him and dare I say, that you dislike him. You don’t like the fact that he’s the Supreme Alpha and you would love to see him step down.” I hit the nail on the head. Lloyd goes speechless. Pin-dropping silence spreads throughout the entire room for a whole lot of minutes. Suffocating tension fills the atmosphere.
I have my fingers crossed on my lap and il praying in my heart for what I’ve said to be the truth. I don’t even want to imagine what would happen if it weren’t.
Lloyd clears his throat, getting my attention.
“That’s… that’s a very serious thing to say, Alpha Jovan. Words like that reach the wrong ears and we’ll both be history.’
“I know. That’s why I made sure we had this talk in my office. So, am I correct? Do you hate Jayce?” He purses his lips for a short while before releasing them again and looking at me.
“What do you plan on doing if I say yes ”
“I’d say join my team. Help me fight against Jayce. Help me take him down once and for all.”
“So you can ascend the throne?” I quickly nod my head and he chuckles.
“I will join your team.” He rises from his seat, looking down at me. “Alert me when anything interesting comes up.” And with that, he exits my office.
Mysterious. Just like Jayce.
Everyone working for him is mysterious.
But that’s not my problem right now. What’s important is the fact that I got one more person on my team and it happens to the Beta of the pack.
I have a very good feeling about this mission.
I will conquer it!
