Watching the old lady’s departing figure, the girl smiled slightly. Wouldn’t Grandma help her? After all, Grandma liked her so much.
After a while, she heard some noise outside. Curiously, she gently opened the door and saw Grandma meeting Agnes not far away.
“Grandma.”
Agnes came out of Jane’s bedroom and greeted the elder politely. The old lady stopped and immediately noticed the familiar bracelet on the girl’s wrist. It was a gift she had given to Jane when they first met, saying that one day Jane could give it to her approved daughter-in-law. The bracelet was hers to give away.
So Jane’s attitude tonight was clear; she favored this girl. Agnes followed Grandma’s gaze to her wrist, feeling a bit awkward. She wasn’t sure if she should explain the bracelet to Grandma, but even if she did, she didn’t know how to start, so she remained silent.
At this moment, Jane also came out of her bedroom.
“Bubu, it’s getting late. Why don’t you stay over tonight?” The old lady suggested kindly.
Standing at the door not far behind the elder, Lisa was completely shocked by these words! Stay overnight? Was this how Grandma handled things? Didn’t Grandma have any doubts about her identity? Why?
Lisa stood stiffly, unable to understand. She even doubted her own ears! How could Grandma let her stay overnight?
Meanwhile, Tom Fritz, who had just come upstairs, also heard this. He stepped onto the last stair and stopped.
Agnes was stunned for a few seconds by Grandma’s invitation, clearly unsure how to respond. Staying over on her first visit? Wouldn’t that seem too forward? Especially considering her real relationship with Tom…
Jane spoke up in a good mood, “Bubu is here for the first time and hasn’t had a proper tour of the estate yet. Why not stay tonight and let Tom show you around? You’re getting engaged soon anyway; you should get familiar with your future home.”
Agnes turned to look at Aunt Jane, unsure how to refuse.
Seeing her discomfort and hesitation, Tom Fritz quickly walked over and protectively put his arm around her shoulders like a husband would. Agnes looked at him as if he were her savior, feeling a sense of security and reassurance.
“Grandma, Mom, Bubu has something else tonight,” Tom Fritz said gently, helping her out of the situation.
Grandma’s kind eyes turned puzzled.
“Is she really just your girlfriend for show? Only holding hands and bringing her home for dinner as part of a fake engagement?”
Tom Fritz’s chest tightened at these words.
Agnes looked past Grandma’s shoulder and saw Lisa standing at the door holding the doorknob. Lisa didn’t have time to hide and bravely met Agnes’s gaze before stepping back and closing the door with a sense of loss and nervousness.
At that moment, Agnes understood something. Lisa must have said something to Grandma earlier about Ansel’s phone call in the yard.
Smiling at the elder, Agnes replied softly, “Grandma, I can stay.”
