Under the gaze of others, Callie felt a bit embarrassed. “There are people here…”
Nelson smiled. “Regan is one of us, why are you shy?”
Sure enough, Regan laughed along. “Nelson, you really make others envious.”
Callie was taken aback and pulled Regan outside. “I’ll be right back.”
Once outside the Paucaster Villa Complex, Regan’s expression turned serious. “Did you know Karlie was caught?”
Callie’s smile froze. “No, when did it happen?”
“Just yesterday, for drug use.”
The weather was nice today, with bright sunshine, but Callie still felt a chill down her spine. “Did she really use drugs?”
Regan looked her in the eye. “Who knows if it’s true or not? The result is what it is.”
From this angle, she could see Nelson standing where they had just been. He was tall and was tending to a pot of flowers, looking beautiful in the sunlight.
Regan also looked over and sighed. “In this circle, don’t take a man’s words too seriously. It’s best if you can get out unscathed. If not, just turn a blind eye and don’t end up like that.”
Callie couldn’t describe her feelings. Karlie had indeed harmed her, but before that, she had harmed Karlie.
Regan had gotten into the car and was about to start the engine when Callie suddenly remembered something and grabbed the car door. She leaned in. “Regan, do I really look like someone?”
Regan’s relaxed demeanor instantly tensed up. She pressed her lips together. “What?”
“They say one reason Nelson married me is because I look like someone. I only know her name is Maeve, which isn’t much of a secret.” Callie spoke slowly. “I want to know if this person is the same one Ahmad always thinks about.”
Regan’s foot slowly eased off the gas pedal. Perhaps because of the glaring sunlight, she squinted her eyes.
She spoke slowly. “You didn’t know? Maeve’s last name is Ellison; her full name is Maevelyn Ellison. She’s Ahmad’s eldest daughter.”
As her lips moved, Callie suddenly experienced tinnitus and couldn’t hear what was said next. Her body felt electrified and she couldn’t move.
“Maevelyn went missing when she was very young. Ahmad and his wife were heartbroken and only had Isaac and Marilyn a year later. You do look quite similar to her. No wonder Nelson is so fond of you.”
Yes, not just Nelson; even Ahmad had always taken good care of her.
Marilyn must have known too; otherwise, she wouldn’t have asked her to wear that dress to see Ahmad that day. At that moment, she must have looked very much like Maevelyn.
“Callie! Are you listening?” Regan raised her voice to bring her back to reality.
Callie steadied herself and forced a smile. “Thank you for telling me. I understand now.”
Regan hesitated. “Did you ask because you saw Ahmad?”
Callie smiled but didn’t answer directly. Instead, she took a few steps back. “You should go now. Drive safely.”
So Maeve was the Ellison family’s missing daughter. No wonder she was so precious, cherished like a treasure.
Standing there, Callie couldn’t help but laugh at herself. She felt like she had taken over someone else’s life.
