When Callie returned to the Paucaster Villa Complex, she was in a daze.
Nelson was still standing there, reading a newspaper. Seeing her out of sorts, he reached out to touch her forehead. “What’s wrong?”
Callie forced a smile and shook her phone. “I just got a news alert. It says that the heiress of Faithview Group was arrested for drug use.”
She saw the man’s eyes darken for a second before he quickly regained his composure. “Ylosea is a city that promotes anti-drug campaigns. It’s only right that she got caught.”
“Is it a coincidence?” Callie quickly responded, staring at him.
Nelson met her gaze without getting angry and answered word by word, “It wasn’t me.”
She had her suspicions but no evidence, so she could only guess the truth from his expression.
“Sorry, I just thought it was too coincidental,” Callie lowered her head.
“I admit to what I’ve done, but this wasn’t me,” Nelson replied calmly, showing no sign of lying.
“Nelson.” Callie suddenly reached out and hugged his waist. “I don’t mean to doubt you. I just feel like you’re too good to me, so much that I don’t know how to repay you.”
Indeed, there were moments in this marriage that left her disheartened, but there were also many touching moments. Callie could feel this man’s sincerity, though it was hard to grasp.
“Isn’t it good this way? I don’t need you to repay me for what I do for you.” Nelson reached out and gently stroked her soft hair.
Callie’s eyes reddened. After a long pause, she couldn’t help but ask, “Are you so good to me because I’m Callie or because I look like Maevelyn?”
As soon as she said this, she could feel Nelson stiffen. When she looked up again, his face had turned very unpleasant.
“Who told you that?”
Callie’s eyes stung. His reaction clearly answered her question. “Actually, I could guess even without anyone telling me. Ahmad said I look like someone he used to know, but his marriage is peaceful, unlike a lover’s.”
“In your circle, it’s unlikely for three people to look alike. The only possibility is that these two people are the same person-Maevelyn, the daughter of the Ellison family, right?”
The more Callie spoke, the worse Nelson’s expression became.
His voice was cold and hard. “So what? Do you think I married you because of Maeve?”
“Isn’t that the case?” Callie couldn’t stop herself from believing it. “A large part of why you’re good to me is because of Maevelyn, right?”
The question was too direct for Nelson to answer immediately.
So Callie understood. She turned to leave but was grabbed by the man. His face was tense, on the verge of anger. He dragged her outside and into the car.
“What are you doing?” Callie tried to resist but was firmly restrained and buckled into the seatbelt.
Nelson leaned against the car door, laughing in anger. He said only one sentence, “An ungrateful wretch.”
He started the car and drove away from the Paucaster Villa Complex.
Callie didn’t want to be led by the nose. Sitting in the passenger seat, she couldn’t calm her emotions. “Even you can’t deny that your kindness to me is compensating for Maevelyn back then. I’m just a substitute.”
Recalling how he had lost his temper with her because of Maeve, everything made sense.
Nelson’s profile was cold and hard, showing no emotion. He drove with one hand and took out his phone with the other, typing a few words and sending them.
“Where are you taking me?”
