Cara’s pov
“How could you let her be in danger!!” The sound of voices like two people arguing filled the room.
“I left her to pack up after training…” I recognised the voice of Garreth, but he was cutted short by the hard accusatory voice of Brian.
“You were giving just a simple assignment, and you couldn’t do it.” Brian retorted back at Garreth,
My mind was still grungy from the influence of alcohol. I remembered that I was led by a young trainee I met in the training ground to this mysterious place, where I had poked my nose where it shouldn’t, my last memory being when Garreth stepped in to save me.
From the looks of it, he had brought me back to the cabin, and brian is angry that his property was in bad shape. Sadly, that’s what I was to him.
I tried to lift myself, but a sharp pain told me that was a wrong idea, I screamed in pain, and the loud fighting happening outside the cabin came to a halt immediately.
I was surprised to see Garreth with a swollen eye and some bruises that looked like fist marks. I raised my eyebrows in confusion.
“Go and get Debby, tell her to leave any damn thing she is doing and come right now” Brian commanded Garreth, who immediately left in a hurry. Leaving only me and Brian, who was fuming in anger.
I cleared my throat, expecting him to lash out at me and demand why I did what I did, but the lashing and shouting I was waiting for didn’t come. Brian stood there with an unreadable expression, staring at me like you would be staring at a fine dress in a shop.
“Who showed you?” he asked
It took a moment for me to realise he was asking me a question.
“Huuh” I answered, his face hardening the more in anger.
“Who took you to the Den?” he repeated, in a low, dangerous tone.
“I took myself,” I answered, putting up a brave font in front of him. I know he won’t do anything harsh to me, seeing as I was his personal collection, though I didn’t want to find out if an angry rogue alpha would snap and pounce on me.
“I was feeling bored, so I decided to wander the pack, I accidentally came across it.” I don’t know why I didn’t mention the young trainee who took me there, he had insisted I follow him, but one thing I know was that It won’t bode well for the young boy if Brian should know about him.
It was better to remain tight-lipped
I tried to sit up with a groan. In the process, my hand slipped, but Brian, like a flash, was beside me, holding me up. Immediately, the familiar tinkling that always happens when Brian and I come in contact coursed through my body.
Brian immediately withdrew, My face can’t help dropping in disappointment seeing that.
“You…you could have gotten hurt, Cara, or worst kidnapped” he tried, covering up his sudden recoil when our arms brushed each other by running a hand through his curly hair
“I am not a child”, I snapped
“Then explain why you could barely go home yesterday, and why you were surrounded by hoodlums in a dark alley” he asked, his voice laced with something , like concern , but i knew better.
“Not like you care” I said, confused at him. One time, he will act like he cares about me and cares so much about my welfare. Then, in a blink of an eye, he would turn into a devil. Like I am his worst enemy.
I watched as he grinded his teeth hard, like someone in hard thinking, but I don’t care.
“It’s not like you care Brian, to you, I am just a commodity, your collection, and sex slave, I am nothing to you but a special item because of my unique bloodline”. I ranted out, my voice breaking at the end.
“Care…” he began, but I cutted him short
” don’t call me that, my name is Cara, you have no right to treat me like I mean nothing to you, I am your mate Brian, and it’s high time you stop being a little baby and reject me like you mean it.” I sobbed , my anger getting the best of me.
Watching him keep quiet, my heart was breaking and fixing itself all at once, I clutched my chest in pain.
“Why does it hurt so much?” I ask myself, no matter how I try to stop thinking about the pain. It felt like a knife twisting my gut. My wolf for a long time had been in hibernation, sucking in silence of not being with her mate.
But now the hard truth faced me.
“My mate doesn’t value us!!”
The atmosphere in the small room suddenly turned cold and disturbing, I wanted to get out of the room, or anything at all to be apart from brian. Being close to him and having in mind that what I had wished since I was little, my dreams I had dreamt were now causing me so much pain and misery.
When I couldn’t bear it any longer, I shouted in frustration “get out!!”
“Cara you have to understand…”
I screamed on top of my voice for him to leave, I was suffocating, and I needed any space I could get.
Immediately, Debby entered the cabin and held me as I continued to scream until I lost my voice.
Debby cuddled me in her bosom as I poured out my pent-up frustrations and distress, sobbing like there was no tomorrow.
After a long time, I mysteriously calmed down with the help of Debby, who was soothing me with a warm glow from her hands. It was like a heavyload was being lifted from me.
Brian and Garreth were nowhere to be seen. He had slipped out in the middle of my sobbing drama.
“Cara you have to calm down, The Den is not how it looks” Debby finally said after a long time of silence.
“The Den, is a way of keeping this pack in check, it is being run by the council of elders, Brian even though he doesn’t like it has no choice because without it, mafians wolf pack will fall apart”.
I kept quiet, unable to think or burden my already tired mind to process what she was saying.
“What was that? What did you do to me?” I asked Debby, referring to the warm glow on her hands.
“That is what every cupbearer has”, she said smiling, it is called the ‘soothing light’ it chases away bad energy and is mostly used to prevent pains in severe injuries when treating a wounded person.
“Can I learn it?” I asked eagerly
But Debby looked at me in pity, as if hesitating on something before she said it
“Cara, about what happened…”
“Noo!, I don’t want to hear about it” I cutted her short.
I was saying about what happened in the training ground, I heard you beat Lissa, the strongest trainee in her set” she asked
I rolled my eyes at the way rumors fly very fast. Yes, I narrated everything that happened to me in the training ground. After my story, she looked up in amazement,
“That is a good thing, Cara, but don’t tell anyone of this” she warned in a serious note, making me look up,
“Why?”
“Remember I told you you are a pureblood,” she asked me,
I nodded,
“and purebloods are not bounded by any law or rules. natural rules and laws are pre-existing laws of Ellorin. example, an Omega being weak, no other wolf defeating an Alpha, Rogues losing all their sanities, and so on. this are natural laws, Cara.
“So what does it have to do with me?”, I asked
“It means that your bloodline is beginning to fight. It wants to be unbounded by the natural rule” she said lowly,
It means that you are slowly becoming an alpha, the burst of powers and the dreams, it’s not just that your bloodline awakened, it has already been inside you, the true reason is that you are slowly becoming an alpha”
I was shocked at what she was saying, which was impossible for an omega to become an alpha. ” I have never heard of an Omega becoming an alpha”.
“And me too, but you are a pureblood Cara. The only pureblood since eight hundred years. who knows what it means to be one” she said
“Please don’t tell Brian,” I pleaded with her. I know she was blindly loyal to Brian, but I want to keep this that is happening to me a secret.
I stared at her. she hesitated for a while before finally relaxing
“Okay, I will respect your decision, but know that I am always here for you” she said, with a motherly affection in her eyes.
I nodded in relief, believing in her. She was the closest person to me, as family and I was beginning to take her as one.
After a while, she said ” If you want to learn the “soothing light” or the cupbearer’s way of life, I can find out time and teach you”.
“Okay,” I agreed on the offer, “I want to learn the cupbearer’s way of life and how to control my powers,” I said with a new resolution.
