OLIVIA
I was praying that Adrian wouldn’t find me in this pathetic situation. The dinner date that was supposed to lighten my mood has suddenly become my mourning ground.
I tried calling Cyril over the phone, and he wasn’t responding. I’ve never been this scared before since I got married to Cyril. I wasn’t certain what the security at the estate must have told Cyril, but I’m pretty sure it has everything to do with him acting up this way. To think that avoiding security was going to save me from trouble, I had no idea that I was heading to my doom.
“What did I ever do for security?” I asked myself rhetorically. I’ve been good to him. I can’t recall offending him to be hated that way.
I texted Cyril and he refused to respond. He read my texts and chose to ignore them.
At that point, I wanted to go home. The dinner suddenly became meaningless to me. Staying out for too long would only worsen my situation. I know Cyril too well. It’s challenging to influence his decision.
I waited for Adrian to show up, too, and he never did. It’s as though he conspired with Cyril to frustrate me.
While I waited for Adrian to show up, I got a call. I was excited because I thought it was Cyril calling me.
As weird as it may sound, he’s the only one I want to speak with. Not even a billion-dollar compared to that feeling.
“Hello?’ I hurriedly answered the phone without confirming who was on the phone.
“I’m sorry, Cyril.
Please forgive me. I got stuck in traffic,” I started explaining myself without waiting to hear from the other end.
“Cyril? What are you talking about? Ma’am, it’s me,” a voice spoke over the phone that sounded too feminine to be Cyril’s.
I took the phone off my ear and discovered it was Kate on the phone.
“Kate?” I hissed immediately.
“Why are you calling me? I was supposed to be at the dinner date with Adrian,” I smirked.
“Date, huh?
Did you finally agree that it’s a date? I thought you said it was just for dinner?” Kate joked. I knew it was one of her funny jokes. Unfortunately, it was the wrong timing. My brain isn’t functioning properly to understand a joke.
“Can you please stop beating around the bush and go straight to the point? I’m not cut out for any of your jokes this time.” I berated Kate when I shouldn’t have. She didn’t offend me; she was just unfortunate to find herself in such a situation.
“You don’t sound too nice. Did anything go wrong at the dinner?” Kate asked again as though her life depended on it. I was getting irritated by her questions. I wanted to hang up the phone, but decided to be more patient with Kate, hoping she would redeem herself this time.
“Cyril called,” Kate disclosed.
“Cyril did what?” I panicked and descended from the car when I wasn’t feeling my legs anymore. I needed to be certain if they were still working.
“You sound surprised.
Did he call you, too? No way, he found out that you are at Adrian’s?” Kate already assumed without letting me speak.
“Hell no,” I quickly debunked.
“Can you stop asking me questions? Why did he call you?” I asked enthusiastically.
Glancing around, I spotted Adrian emerging from afar. He was waving at me to come over and I ignored him.
It was a complicated situation where I would be forced to choose the call over Adrian. This is my only chance of overcoming Cyril’s nightmare.
“He asked if I knew where you were,”
“And what did you tell him?” I asked Kate.
“I told him you went for a doctor’s appointment,” Kate replied.
“Doctor’s appointment?” I screamed in shock. It was a brilliant excuse. I didn’t just think it was the best thing to say in my situation.
“For crying out loud, who dresses like this for a doctor’s appointment? You could have thought of a more convincing lie,” I fumed at Kate.
“Wait, you’re going to scold me for saving your ass? I did nothing wrong. That was the only thing I could think of. He puts me under so much pressure,” Kate cried. From her tone, I could sense how hurt she was. I then realized that I was just being ungrateful to her.
“I’m sorry for yelling. I was just confused. Thank you for coming through for me. I have to go now,” I ended the phone.
She just saved me. The least I could do for her was to show my appreciation.
Adrian was already a few meters away from me. I couldn’t ignore him any further.
The call from Kate was very helpful. It’s difficult to imagine that I was very close to ignoring it because I thought it was never going to make sense to me.
“Hey,” Adrian got closer to me and planted a peck on my soft chin. I couldn’t resist him. The peck was precisely what I needed.
“I apologize for staying too long. It was never intended. I had to close a deal. I also apologize for your outburst with the estate security. Trust me, he’s not always like that,” Adrian Apologized. He didn’t give me any breathing space to speak.
I didn’t respond to any of his apologies. What’s the point? I am still going to return home to Cyril’s troubles.
“Where’s your home?
Can we please leave now?” I quietly asked him. I lost every bit of strength in me.
“Not until you tell me what’s wrong.
You seemed so upset. Is it about security? Please tell me, and I’ll handle it immediately,” he assured me. He looked like he was ready to fight for me. That’s the kind of man I wished for. The man then would be inclined to take a bullet for me rather than shoot me in the leg.
“It’s not the security.
He already apologized.
I have nothing against him.
It’s Cyril. He wants me home,” I disclosed in a faint tone. I couldn’t speak further. To express myself further, I brought out my phone and showed Adrian the text.
“No way!” He screamed.
“This shouldn’t be happening.
What do we do now?”
